The Georg-von-Vollmar-Akademie e.V. is a non-profit institution for political education open to all, based at Schloss Aspenstein in Kochel am See. It is committed to the values of social democracy, freedom, justice and solidarity, and offers seminars, podium discussions, readings, theatre, workshops and conferences, as well as digital formats such as webinars and podcasts. Its seminar programme covers topics including social justice, environment and sustainability, and international relations. The academy was founded in 1968, when it was transformed from a party school into a non-profit, non-partisan association, while remaining committed to the basic values of social democracy. It is named after Georg von Vollmar, the founding father of the Bavarian SPD in 1892. In 1981 it established the Waldemar-von-Knoeringen-Preis. In 2019 the academy faced imminent closure after a large share of public funding was cut, but it did not give up and launched a major campaign for support.

History

The Georg-von-Vollmar-Akademie e.V. was founded in 1968, when it was transformed from a party school into a non-profit, non-partisan association that nevertheless remained committed to the basic values of social democracy. It is named after Georg von Vollmar, the founding father of the Bavarian SPD in 1892. In 1949, the SPD state party conference decided that every Bavarian party member had to pay an additional contribution of 10 pfennig, the so-called 'Kochelzehnerl', to help finance and equip the school. In 1981, the academy established the 'Waldemar-von-Knoeringen-Preis' for merits in politics, science, journalism and art in the tradition of the workers' movement and the goals of democratic socialism; the prize has been awarded regularly since then. In 2019, the academy faced imminent closure after a large share of public funding was cut, but it did not give up and launched a major campaign for support.
