It began in 1934 as Atlanta Telco Credit Union, founded by eight telephone employees with an initial investment of $160, and today describes itself as the third largest credit union in Georgia with $4.3 billion in assets, serving members across the state. History

Georgia's Own Credit Union traces its origins to 1934, when eight telephone employees founded Atlanta Telco Credit Union, which opened on December 6th with an initial investment of $160. By 1940 it had grown to serve 2,200 members, and in 1944 it was renamed Georgia Telco Credit Union and expanded services to telephone employees throughout Georgia. It reached $1 million in assets in 1949 and opened its first branch at 125 Perimeter Center in Sandy Springs in 1976. In 1977, President and CEO Eloise Woods was appointed Chairperson of the National Credit Union Administration by President Jimmy Carter. During the 1980s it reached $100 million in assets, evolved from a basic savings-and-loan institution into a full-service financial institution, and added 10 new branch locations; in 1984 it began offering checking accounts, CDs, IRAs, home equity loans, and credit cards. It added two Savannah locations in 1987 after merging with Savannah-Chatham Federal Credit Union, began offering mortgage loans in 1992, and named Charlotte Ayers President and CEO in 1999 following Eloise Woods's retirement after 52 years of service. The credit union states that it is now the third largest credit union in Georgia with $4.3 billion in assets, serving members all over the state, and its headquarters digital sign is located at 100 Peachtree in Atlanta's Arts & Entertainment District.
