Overview

Gera Arcaden is a shopping centre located in the city centre of Gera, a independent city in the German state of Thuringia. It stands on the site of the former Interhotel Gera, which was built between 1965 and 1967 and later operated as the Maritim Hotel Gera from 1992 to 1996 before closing. Demolition of the hotel began on 24 January 1997, and construction of the shopping centre followed. Designed by the Düsseldorf architectural firm RKW Architektur +, the centre opened on 11 November 1998 at 8:08 a.m. The building is characterised by a semi-circular glass roof structure that spans the two-storey retail area and provides natural light. The arcades that give the centre its name were modelled on the exterior façade along Heinrichstraße and Breitscheidstraße. A parking garage with around 600 spaces opened at the same time, and it is located behind the listed façade of the former Halpert & Co. carpet factory (built 1925–1927, architect Johannes Koppe) on Friedericistraße, which was incorporated into the construction of the Gera Arcaden. Today the Gera Arcaden are owned by Redos Institutional, with centre management handled by Sonae Sierra. Anchor tenants include the fashion chains C&A and H&M, as well as Kaufland, dm, Euronics, TK Maxx and Mein Fischer. In total there are 75 shops, including food and beverage outlets, spread over approximately 30,800 square metres of retail space. A further 7,500 square metres are allocated to office space and a fitness studio. Around 1,000 people are currently employed in the shopping centre. The centre hosts events such as "Arcaden tanzt!" (Arcaden Dances!), various fashion shows and other events like a police day. The roof of the Gera Arcaden is greened, and beehives kept there contribute to the production of the centre's own "Arcaden honey", which can be purchased in the centre. Since its opening, the centre has seen minor changes, including numerous tenant changes, replacement of internal signage and renovation of sanitary facilities.

History

The Gera Arcaden shopping centre stands on the site of the former Interhotel Gera, which was built between 1965 and 1967. After the political changes in East Germany, the hotel continued as the Maritim Hotel Gera from 1992 to 1996 before ultimately closing. Demolition of the hotel began on 24 January 1997, and construction work for the shopping centre was subsequently initiated. The design came from the Düsseldorf architectural firm RKW Architektur +. The centre opened on 11 November 1998 at 8:08 a.m. The new building is characterised by a semi-circular glass roof structure that spans the two-storey retail area and provides natural light. The arcades that give the centre its name were modelled on the exterior façade along Heinrichstraße and Breitscheidstraße. A parking garage with around 600 spaces opened at the same time.
