Overview

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie (DGSKA) — known until 2017 as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde (DGV) — is described on its official website as the central professional representation for ethnologists in the German-speaking region. It serves as a platform for scholarly exchange, supports early-career researchers, and represents the interests of the discipline in the academic world and the broader public. Its predecessor was the Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde, founded in 1929.

History

The predecessor of today's DGSKA was the Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde, founded in 1929. At that time, larger specialist societies in the German-speaking region included the Berliner Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte, and the Anthropologische Gesellschaft in Wien. The discipline was institutionally represented mainly at museums for Völkerkunde, and at universities there were courses in ethnology in various faculties, occasionally also adjunct professorships for ethnology. By 1929 only two university-specific institutes had been established: the Ethnologisch-Anthropologische Institut in Leipzig, founded in 1914 as the Ethnographisches Seminar, and the Institut für Völkerkunde in Wien, established in 1928. The association was known until 2017 as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde (DGV).
