Overview

The German Central Institute for Social Issues (Deutsches Zentralinstitut für soziale Fragen, DZI) traces its origins to 1893, when an information office was founded under the leadership of Jeanette Schwerin by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für ethische Kultur e.V. to collect and provide information about Berlin welfare institutions. It later became independent as the Zentrale für private Fürsorge e.V. in 1906 and its welfare archive became independent as the Archiv für Wohlfahrtspflege in 1926. The DZI provides donation advice, maintains a database of donation organizations, publishes the journal Soziale Arbeit, and documents social-work literature.

History

In 1893, under the leadership of Jeanette Schwerin, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für ethische Kultur e.V. founded an information office that collected information about Berlin welfare institutions and made it available to interested parties. In 1896 the first Graubuch appeared: Die Wohlfahrtseinrichtungen Berlins. Ein Auskunftsbuch. In 1906 the information office became independent under the name Zentrale für private Fürsorge e.V., and its archive of welfare institutions began its information activities about donation-collecting organizations. In 1926 the archive became independent as the Archiv für Wohlfahrtspflege as a Gesellschaft bürgerlichen Rechts. During 1933–1945, the long-serving managing director Siddy Wronsky was removed from office by the National Socialist rulers and emigrated to Palestine; her deputy and successor Dr. Sofie Quast was deprived of the management in 1936 but remained active for the archive in another function, and after the war she led its reconstruction and managed its affairs until 1972. In 1951, Governing Mayor Professor Dr. Ernst Reuter, as chairman of the Archiv für Wohlfahrtspflege, founded the journal Soziale Arbeit. On 15 October 2018 the DZI celebrated its 125th anniversary with a ceremony in Berlin.
