History
According to the official publishing history, Gerstenberg Verlag is one of the oldest publishing houses in Germany. Johann Daniel Gerstenberg founded a publishing bookshop in Saint Petersburg in 1792. In 1797 he moved to Hildesheim for family reasons, where the publishing house today has its seat at the historic market square. The publishing house is a family business, now in its seventh generation. The children's and young adult book programme includes board books, picture books, narrative children's and young adult literature, and non-fiction books. Through Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Rotraut Susanne Berner's Wimmel books, the publisher became one of the best-known children's book publishers. In 1999, with the poetry collection Dunkel war's, der Mond schien helle, the first of Gerstenberg's 'house books' appeared, which developed into an important programme segment.
