Overview
Gesellschaft für Dienste im Alter mbH (GDA) is a non-profit German service company that operates senior housing and care facilities. Founded on 1 January 1971 in Hannover as Gemeinschaft Deutsche Altenhilfe, it was renamed GDA Gemeinschaft Deutsche Altenhilfe GmbH in February 2014 and later adopted its current name. The company is headquartered in Hannover and is owned by the Deutscher Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband, the Stiftung Parität, and the Paritätische regional associations of Lower Saxony and Hesse. GDA operates nine residential facilities at seven locations across Germany, including six senior residential homes (Wohnstifte), one senior residence, two assisted living facilities, and one nursing home. Approximately 2,600 elderly people live in GDA facilities, of whom 500 are in nursing care areas. The company employs around 1,400 staff in nursing, care, administration, kitchen and service, housekeeping, technical services, and management. In 2024, GDA generated revenue of 105 million euros with a balance sheet total of 156 million euros. GDA's concept emphasizes enabling residents to live independently in their own apartments for as long as possible, supported by a range of courses, events, and on-site services such as restaurants, cafés, libraries, swimming pools, saunas, hairdressers, and physiotherapy. The company also operates its own outpatient nursing services and special dementia care programs. GDA is a member of the Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband network and is led by managing director Holger Horrmann, with Kerstin Tack as chair of the supervisory board since April 2022.
History
Gesellschaft für Dienste im Alter (GDA) was founded on 1 January 1971 in Hannover as Gemeinschaft Deutsche Altenhilfe, a non-profit limited liability company. Immediately after its founding, construction began on the first three residential homes in Trippstadt, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, and Göttingen, with the first residents moving into the Göttingen facility in 1971. Six years later, two additional homes opened in Hannover, and in 1983 the first seniors moved into the Wiesbaden residential home. In 1989, GDA opened another residential home in Hannover, followed by one in Frankfurt am Main in 1992. In 2004, the company took over an existing senior residence in Goslar. On 1 January 2012, the Domizil am Schlosspark facility in Bad Homburg (then called Wohnen am Schlosspark) became part of GDA, offering assisted living. On 1 April 2013, GDA assumed sponsorship of the Rind’sches Bürgerstift, also in Bad Homburg, which combines a nursing home, assisted living, and an in-house outpatient nursing service that also serves external clients. In February 2014, the company was renamed from GDA Gemeinschaft Deutsche Altenhilfe GmbH to Gesellschaft für Dienste im Alter mbH. The non-profit GDA-Stiftung was established on 29 January 2014 and recognized by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior and Sport on 11 February 2014; the foundation helps older people who have fallen into financial hardship through no fault of their own, particularly to remain in their familiar living environment. As of 2024, GDA operates nine facilities at seven locations, employs around 1,400 people, and generated revenue of 105 million euros.
