Overview

GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH is a Munich-based trade-fair and exhibition organizer that has served the German skilled-trades sector (Handwerk) and small and medium-sized enterprises for more than 75 years. The company develops, stages and organizes trade fairs and congresses for all industries in which the skilled trades and the Mittelstand are active, offering associations, exhibitors and visitors tailored solutions built on deep sector knowledge, long-standing industry contacts and decades of experience. GHM traces its origins to the Verein für Handwerks-Ausstellungen und Messen, founded in Munich on 15 October 1948. Its first event, the Münchner Handwerksmesse, launched in 1949 and was renamed Deutsche Handwerksmesse in 1950 and then Internationale Handwerksmesse (IHM) in 1962. The organization itself was renamed GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksausstellungen und -messen in 1968. Over the decades GHM added numerous specialized and consumer fairs, including the Internationale Fachausstellung Chemisch-Reinigung und Färberei (1955), DACH+WAND (1974) and Heim+Handwerk (1978). Today GHM positions itself as the leading trade-fair organizer for the skilled trades and the Mittelstand in Germany. Its portfolio spans sector-leading trade fairs and end-consumer exhibitions, including the IFH/Intherm for the sanitation, heating and air-conditioning (SHK) sector, which is approaching its 50th edition. The company emphasizes customer-centricity, location independence and competence, and provides a full service chain from conceptualization and marketing through execution and post-event evaluation. GHM is a private limited company (mbH) headquartered in Munich. It operates primarily in Germany and serves the wider European trades sector through its events. Its stated values include trust and reliability, professionalism, expertise and a valuable industry network.

History

GHM's history begins on 15 October 1948 with the founding of the Verein für Handwerks-Ausstellungen und Messen in Munich. According to its statutes, the association's purpose was to organize exhibitions and trade fairs, or participate in such events in Germany and abroad, to promote the skilled trades. In 1949 the Münchner Handwerksmesse launched as the association's first fair. It was renamed Deutsche Handwerksmesse in 1950 and then Internationale Handwerksmesse (IHM) in 1962, reflecting its growing national and international scope. In 1955 GHM organized the Internationale Fachausstellung Chemisch-Reinigung und Färberei (International Trade Exhibition for Chemical Cleaning and Dyeing), held under the patronage of Federal Economics Minister Ludwig Erhard. The event featured 184 companies across three halls and drew around 25,000 visitors, with daily fashion shows and demonstrations of chemically cleaned and impregnated rainwear subjected to artificial spray rain. In 1968 the association was renamed GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksausstellungen und -messen. The 1970s brought further expansion: in 1974 GHM first staged the DACH+WAND trade fair in Munich, and in 1978 it created Heim+Handwerk, an annual consumer exhibition traditionally held in late November or early December in Munich. In 2008 the sector-leading fairs for roofers (DACH+WAND) and carpenters (Holzbau+Ausbau) were brought together under a new umbrella. Over the following decades GHM continued to develop and manage a portfolio of trade fairs and congresses for the skilled trades and the Mittelstand, including the IFH/Intherm for the sanitation, heating and air-conditioning sector, which is approaching its 50th edition. The company describes itself as the leading trade-fair organizer for the skilled trades and the Mittelstand in Germany, with more than 75 years of experience, a strong industry network and a full-service approach spanning conceptualization, marketing, execution and evaluation.
