Overview
The Gesellschaft für Musikgeschichte in Baden-Württemberg e. V. (GMG) is a non-profit registered association based in Stuttgart, Germany, dedicated to researching, documenting and disseminating the musical history and present-day musical life of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. It works closely with musicological faculties and institutions across the state as well as with musicians and music lovers, and is entered in the register of associations of the Stuttgart local court (VR 381045). It is a member of the Landesmusikrat Baden-Württemberg. The society's mission covers both research and public outreach. It investigates the history and contemporary practice of musical life in the state and makes selected musical sources accessible through documentation. Results are published in scholarly and popular-scholarly writings, audio and video recordings, and academically grounded sheet-music editions intended for practical use. Beyond printed publications, the GMG seeks to bring the state's rich musical heritage to a broad audience through lectures, conferences, workshops, concerts and excursions. A central focus of its work is the development of a multimedia song portal devoted to the German-language art song (Kunstlied). Its most important task is the research and provision of the song repertoire in an online sheet-music library, in which song editions are preferably published as full texts. Information about musical life in Baden-Württemberg is also made available on the society's website. The GMG was founded on 30 April 1993 by the musicologist Manfred Hermann Schmid (University of Tübingen), Rolf Keller — then a senior official (Ministerialdirektor) at the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice — and Albert Rothmund, then chairman of the Historischer Verein für Württembergisch Franken. Its founding president was Rolf Keller (1993–1999), followed by Hermann Fünfgeld (1999–2006), Manfred Hermann Schmid (2006–2009), Joachim Kremer (2009–2015) and Rainer Bayreuther (2015–2020). Since December 2020 the president has been Frieder Bernius, with Rainer Bayreuther as vice-president. As a publisher, the GMG has issued several series. From 1993 to 2020 it published Denkmäler der Musik in Baden-Württemberg with Strube-Verlag, continued from 2021 by ortus musikverlag. In 2000 the first volume of Quellen zur Musikgeschichte in Baden-Württemberg. Kommentierte Faksimileausgaben appeared with Strube-Verlag, with the second volume following in 2019 at ortus musikverlag. Since 2021 the society has published individual editions of selected compositions in the series Musik in Baden-Württemberg. Noten at ortus musikverlag. On behalf of the GMG, Siegbert Rampe edited the Neue Ausgabe sämtlicher Werke von Johann Jakob Froberger (Bärenreiter-Verlag) from 1993 to 2015. The society also publishes the Jahrbuch. Musik in Baden-Württemberg (1994–2003 Metzler, 2004–2017 Strube, since 2018 Metzler again) and the series Quellen und Studien. Musik in Baden-Württemberg (since 1995; Metzler until 2002, Strube 2005–2012, Metzler again since 2018). Various recordings have been produced in cooperation with Südwestrundfunk.
History
The Gesellschaft für Musikgeschichte in Baden-Württemberg e. V. (GMG) was founded on 30 April 1993 by the musicologist Manfred Hermann Schmid of the University of Tübingen, Rolf Keller — at the time a senior official (Ministerialdirektor) at the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice — and Albert Rothmund, then chairman of the Historischer Verein für Württembergisch Franken and a former senior district administrator (Erster Landesbeamter a. D.) of the Schwäbisch Hall district. It was established as a non-profit association and entered in the register of associations of the Stuttgart local court (VR 381045). Rolf Keller served as founding president from 1993 to 1999. He was succeeded by Hermann Fünfgeld, former intendant of SDR, who led the society from 1999 to 2006. Manfred Hermann Schmid then served as president from 2006 to 2009, followed by Joachim Kremer, a musicologist at the Stuttgart University of Music, from 2009 to 2015, and Rainer Bayreuther from 2015 to 2020. Since December 2020 the president has been Frieder Bernius, with Rainer Bayreuther as vice-president. Honorary members include the founding members Albert Rothmund and Manfred Hermann Schmid, former president Hermann Fünfgeld, and Andreas Traub. From its beginnings the society combined research with publishing and public engagement. Its stated task is to research the history and present of musical life in the state and to make selected musical sources accessible and documented. Findings are published in scholarly and popular-scholarly writings, audio and video recordings, and academically grounded sheet-music editions for practical use. In addition, the GMG brings the state's musical history to a broad audience through lectures, conferences, workshops, concerts and excursions. Publishing has been a core activity. From 1993 to 2020 the GMG published the series Denkmäler der Musik in Baden-Württemberg with Strube-Verlag; from 2021 the series has been continued by ortus musikverlag. In 2000 the first volume of the series Quellen zur Musikgeschichte in Baden-Württemberg. Kommentierte Faksimileausgaben appeared with Strube-Verlag, and the second volume followed in 2019 at ortus musikverlag. Since 2021 the society has issued individual editions of selected compositions in the series Musik in Baden-Württemberg. Noten, published by ortus musikverlag. On behalf of the GMG, Siegbert Rampe edited the Neue Ausgabe sämtlicher Werke von Johann Jakob Froberger, published by Bärenreiter-Verlag, between 1993 and 2015. The society also publishes the Jahrbuch. Musik in Baden-Württemberg, which appeared from 1994 to 2003 with Metzler Verlag, from 2004 to 2017 with Strube-Verlag, and since 2018 with Metzler again. Since 1995 it has published the series Quellen und Studien. Musik in Baden-Württemberg — with Metzler until 2002, with Strube-Verlag from 2005 to 2012, and again with Metzler since 2018. A volume on music at the Württemberg teachers' seminaries, edited by Joachim Kremer, was published by Bockel Verlag in 2015 following a GMG conference held in Schwäbisch Gmünd in 2011. Various recordings have been produced in cooperation with Südwestrundfunk. A major contemporary focus is the multimedia song portal dedicated to the German-language art song. The society's central task here is to research the song repertoire and make it available in an online sheet-music library, with song editions preferably published as full texts. The GMG is a member of the Landesmusikrat Baden-Württemberg and maintains a website providing information on musical life in Baden-Württemberg.
