Overview

The Gesellschaft für Naturschutz und Ornithologie Rheinland-Pfalz e.V. (GNOR) is a non-profit nature conservation association based in the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It was founded on 12 March 1977 in Bad Münster am Stein, entered in the register of associations at the Amtsgericht Landau on 3 August 1977, and recognised as a charitable body on 13 September 1977. Its statutory purpose is the promotion of nature conservation and landscape management under the Federal Nature Conservation Act and the Rhineland-Palatinate state nature conservation law, as well as the conduct and evaluation of ecological surveys in Rhineland-Palatinate and neighbouring regions. The association pursues these aims on a scientific basis and exclusively in a charitable form. GNOR's work is organised around voluntary working groups (Arbeitskreise) focused on ornithology, herpetofauna, butterflies, bee-eaters, bat protection in the Rhein-Lahn area, grasshoppers, dragonflies and molluscs, alongside regional working groups for the Altrhein, Nahe valley, Palatinate, Rheinhessen and Westerwald areas. Members collect data on the distribution and population trends of animals and plants, contribute to Red Lists, propose and justify protected areas, and carry out numerous species protection projects and habitat maintenance measures each year. As a recognised state nature conservation organisation under the Federal Nature Conservation Act, GNOR participates in official planning procedures through its regional working groups. The association maintains a state office (Landesgeschäftsstelle) in Mainz and a southern office (Geschäftsstelle Süd) in Erfweiler near Dahn; an earlier northern office had to be given up in 2007. It publishes the scientific journal "Fauna und Flora in Rheinland-Pfalz" with supplementary volumes and an annual ornithological report, as well as the membership magazine GNORinfo, which has appeared since 1993 (following the GNOR Rundschreiben from 1977). In 2006 GNOR established the proNATUR Rheinland-Pfalz foundation, initially endowed with 750,000 euros, to support conservation, research, land acquisition and environmental education. GNOR is a member of the German Nature Conservation Ring (Deutscher Naturschutzring).

History

The Gesellschaft für Naturschutz und Ornithologie Rheinland-Pfalz e.V. (GNOR) was founded on 12 March 1977 in Bad Münster am Stein. It was entered in the register of associations at the Amtsgericht Landau on 3 August 1977 and recognised as a charitable corporation on 13 September 1977. Among the founding members was Dr. habil. Manfred Niehuis, who served as chairman from 1977 to 1980 and later became an honorary member; Heinz Wissing was the association's first managing director from 1977 to 1980. The association's statutory purpose is the promotion of nature conservation and landscape management in the sense of the Federal Nature Conservation Act and the Rhineland-Palatinate state nature conservation law, as well as the conduct and evaluation of ecological investigations in Rhineland-Palatinate and neighbouring areas, pursued on a scientific basis and exclusively in a charitable form. From its early years GNOR has been active in documenting the flora and fauna of Rhineland-Palatinate. Members and staff have contributed substantially to various Red Lists of the federal state. Through the application for and expert justification of protected areas, and through numerous species protection projects, the association has played a significant part in securing or re-creating habitats for threatened animals and plants and their communities. Annual maintenance and upkeep measures are carried out across the state, and land is leased or purchased to preserve or develop areas worthy of protection. Thematic working groups conduct survey programmes on fauna and flora and on nature conservation questions. As a state nature conservation organisation recognised under the Federal Nature Conservation Act, members organised in regional working groups participate in official planning procedures. GNOR has maintained a state office in Mainz and a southern office in Erfweiler near Dahn; a northern office that once existed had to be abandoned in 2007. The association operated the NaturErlebnisZentrum Wappenschmiede in Fischbach bei Dahn, an environmental education centre with overnight accommodation for school classes and youth groups; this project was given up in 2024 and the land sold to the municipality of Fischbach. In 2006 GNOR established the Stiftung proNATUR Rheinland-Pfalz, initially endowed with 750,000 euros, whose statutory purposes include the publication of scientific work, the purchase, lease and sustainable management of land, environmental education and nature research. GNOR is a member of the Deutscher Naturschutzring. It publishes the journal "Fauna und Flora in Rheinland-Pfalz" with a supplementary series and an annual ornithological report, as well as monographs such as "Die Tagfalter der Pfalz", "Die Prachtkäfer in Rheinland-Pfalz und im Saarland" and "Die Fledermäuse der Pfalz". The first volume of the four-volume "Die Vogelwelt von Rheinland-Pfalz" (Avifauna) appeared in early 2015. For members, the GNOR Rundschreiben has been published since 1977 and the GNORinfo since 1993.
