Overview

The Gesellschaft für Sicherheitspolitik e.V. (GSP) is a German voluntary association that describes itself as being in dialogue with the public since 1952. It was founded as the Gesellschaft für Wehrkunde (GfW) in 1952. The GSP organizes security-policy events through more than 80 sections throughout Germany and maintains a federal board, a board of trustees (Kuratorium), and cooperation partners. As a non-profit association it receives an annual institutional grant from the German federal budget, administered by the Presse- und Informationsamt der Bundesregierung.

History

The GSP was founded as the Gesellschaft für Wehrkunde (GfW) in 1952. According to its own history page, even before and after the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany on 8 May 1949 there were efforts to create a civilian, independent and non-partisan association, which aimed at a defensive resilience in the Federal Republic of Germany and also opposed the disadvantaging of former Wehrmacht soldiers in post-war society. The page states that with the decision for "rearmament" and the accession of the Federal Republic of Germany to the North Atlantic Alliance, the embedding in the developing Western community of values had to be communicated to the population. It cites the Berlin Blockade of 1948, the build-up of barracked police units in the Soviet occupation zone, the expansive Eastern Bloc policy of the Soviet Union and the beginning of the Korean War in 1953 as leading to a widespread sense of threat in politics and society. The association describes itself as being in dialogue with the population since 1952 and organizes security-policy events in over 80 sections throughout Germany. It marked "70 years of GSP" with a ceremony on 5 October 2022.
