Overview
The Gesundheitszentrum zum Heiligen Geist — today generally known as the Krankenhaus Heilig Geist Boppard — is a hospital campus in the town of Boppard in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is one of five hospital locations operated by the Gemeinschaftsklinikum Mittelrhein gGmbH, a non-profit hospital group. The site sits in Boppard's town centre near the Rhine, framed by Rheinallee to the north, Bahnhofstraße to the west and Heerstraße to the south, close to the former Carmelite monastery and the town's main railway station. The hospital's roots reach back to the Middle Ages: the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist is described as the oldest social institution of the town of Boppard, with origins in a donation by Boppard knightly and burgher families in the mid-13th century, and a second root in the Gotteshaus or Schöffenbruderschaft brotherhood founded in 1349 with its Kleinen Hospital. After the French Revolution both charitable institutions were merged into the Stiftung Hospital zum Heiligen Geist. An extension building of 1900 provided the first premises of today's hospital, which has been enlarged over the centuries. The main building of the former hospital was demolished in 1975. Today the campus combines inpatient and outpatient care with senior services: the Wohnstift zum Heiligen Geist, Belgrano, a senior residence, is run by the group subsidiary Seniocura GmbH, and parts of the building wings used by the residence as well as the Hospitaltor are listed monuments. Around 270 staff work at the Boppard site, treating roughly 3,600 inpatient (including day-patient) and 6,300 outpatient patients (including outpatient surgery) each year. As the only one of the group's five hospital locations, Boppard has a department for psychosomatics. Its clinics and units include internal medicine, acute geriatrics, psychosomatics, wound medicine, surgery, plastic/hand/aesthetic and burn surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, anaesthesia/intensive/emergency medicine and pain therapy, and an ENT ward. Centres include a family-friendly intensive care unit, the Wundzentrum Mittelrhein, a treatment facility for diabetic foot syndrome and the Ästhetik-Zentrum Mittelrhein. The group's Medizinisches Versorgungszentrum (MVZ) Mittelrhein adds outpatient practices for surgery and for psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, and the group company Seniocura operates the "Stiftmobil" nursing service for people in their home environment.
History
The Hospital zum Heiligen Geist is described as the oldest social institution of the town of Boppard, with two roots reaching back into the Middle Ages. The first is a donation from the mid-13th century by Boppard knightly and burgher families; this hospital already bore the name Hospital zum Heiligen Geist. Because no foundation charter survives, the founding cannot be dated exactly; it is assumed that, as in Koblenz and Bingen, the hospital arose in the 12th century at the local collegiate church, and entries in the liber donationum suggest that around 1260 it was detached from the collegiate church and became a civic institution. The second root is the Gotteshaus or Schöffenbruderschaft brotherhood with its Kleinen Hospital, founded in 1349 by Boppard lay assessor families in the context of the plague and the flagellant processions along the Rhine that summer; the brotherhood was founded weeks after those events "for the care of the Passion idea and for charity", and in 1476 its statutes were changed so that only members of the lay assessor and council families could be admitted. The building of the Kleinen Hospitals, the "Haus Godes", stood on the Obere Heerstraße near the Britzelpforte and is documented as being in the brotherhood's possession at the end of the 15th century. The former Hospital zum Heiligen Geist, probably destroyed by fire, was rebuilt on the Rhine in 1751 and served both as a poorhouse and a hospital; it is documented for 1489, though it may be considerably older, and legend has it that Bernard of Clairvaux stayed in this hospital during his time in Boppard. An extension building of the hospital was erected in 1900 on the other side of the Niederstadtstraße and connected to the main building by an overbuilding; this extension provided the first premises of today's hospital, which has been successively enlarged over the past centuries. The main building of the former hospital was demolished in 1975. As a consequence of the French Revolution, both social institutions were merged into the Stiftung Hospital zum Heiligen Geist. In the modern era the site is operated by the Gemeinschaftsklinikum Mittelrhein gGmbH as the Krankenhaus Heilig Geist, one of the group's five hospital locations, and the associated Wohnstift zum Heiligen Geist, Belgrano, senior residence is run by the group subsidiary Seniocura GmbH. The facilities lie in Boppard's town centre near the Rhine, framed by Rheinallee, Bahnhofstraße and Heerstraße, with the former Carmelite monastery and monastery church to the west and Boppard Hauptbahnhof to the south-east; parts of the building wings used by the residence and the Hospitaltor are listed monuments. The buildings on the Rhine were used as a senior home until the move to the new building, while the town-side complex was reserved for the hospital; today the Rhine-front buildings are still used for assisted living and short-term care but essentially also serve the hospital. Around 270 staff work at the Boppard site, treating roughly 3,600 inpatient (including day-patient) and 6,300 outpatient patients (including outpatient surgery) per year. As the only one of the five group sites, Boppard has a psychosomatics department, and the group seeks to set different care emphases at its different locations.
