Overview
Getzner, Mutter & CIE. GmbH & Co. KG, often referred to as Getzner Holding, is one of Europe's oldest industrial companies, founded on 1 August 1818 in Vorarlberg, Austria, by Christian Getzner, Franz Xaver Mutter and Andreas Gassner. Originally a textile manufacturer that employed almost 3,000 home-based handloom weavers, the company has evolved over two centuries into an internationally active group with two independent operating businesses: Getzner Textil (separated in 1980) and Getzner Werkstoffe (established in 1969). The holding company secures the long-term development of the group and is owned by direct descendants of the founding families. Getzner Textil is a leading manufacturer of sophisticated African dressmaking damasks and a significant supplier of fashion fabrics for shirts, blouses and corporate fashion, with a Technics and Mobility unit developing innovative technical textiles. Getzner Werkstoffe specialises in vibration protection and isolation products for rail, construction and industry. The group also includes Getzner Energie, which generates sustainable hydroelectric power. As of the latest company information, the Getzner Group reports annual turnover of 588 million euros, 2,175 employees worldwide and 29 locations and subsidiaries. The company is headquartered in Bürs, Vorarlberg, and is led by CEO Markus Comploj. Its corporate structure comprises shareholders from the founding families, a board of advisors/supervisory board, and a management board. The group's stated vision is to operate as a future-oriented, active family business pursuing long-term value growth, guided by values of courage and perseverance.
History
Getzner, Mutter & Cie. was founded on 1 August 1818 when Christian Getzner, Franz Xaver Mutter and Andreas Gassner signed the articles of association for their new company. The primary business was the manufacture and marketing of textiles. In its early years, the company employed almost 3,000 handloom weavers working from home throughout the Vorarlberg Oberland region, at a time when the number of such weavers was at a record high. In 1871, the first coloured cloth weaving mill with 288 mechanical power looms began production, although almost 4,000 handloom weavers still worked from home in the region. In 1886, the Klarenbrunn spinning mill went into operation; it was the first local factory lit by electric lighting, and a private telephone network was installed connecting all Getzner companies. In 1898, the spinning and weaving mill in Bürs was considerably extended. In 1910, the Alvier plant at the egress of the Bürs gorge went into operation, the first and largest of the company's four hydropowered power plants. In 1936, Getzner Blei... (the record is truncated). Over the 20th century, the company diversified. Getzner Werkstoffe was established in 1969, and Getzner Textil became a separate company in 1980. The group also includes Getzner Energie, which generates sustainable hydroelectric power. Today, Getzner, Mutter & Cie. operates as a holding company securing the long-term development of the Getzner Group, which consists of two independent companies with shared roots. The company remains owned by direct descendants of the founders and is one of the oldest industrial companies in Europe.
