Overview

GHGSat is a global GHG emissions monitoring company delivering independent greenhouse gas insights through a dedicated satellite constellation and advanced aircraft sensors. Its facility-level data and analytics are positioned to help operators protect revenue, improve asset performance, and enable governments to design evidence-based climate and energy policy. The company offers satellite emissions monitoring, airborne emissions monitoring, and a third-party global survey, serving industries including oil and gas, landfills, government, finance, mining, and agriculture.

History

GHGSat describes itself as a global GHG emissions monitoring company delivering independent greenhouse gas insights through the world's largest dedicated satellite constellation and advanced aircraft sensors. Its founding story states that in 2011, companies mostly self-reported their greenhouse gas emissions using engineering models or estimates rather than direct measurements, ground sensors could not scale globally, and public satellites lacked the resolution to identify individual sources. GHGSat founder Stéphane Germain, described as an engineer with 30 years in space technology, saw this as a solvable engineering problem: miniaturize a high-resolution gas detection sensor into a microsatellite that could measure precisely. In 2016, GHGSat launched Claire, described as the world's first commercial satellite for greenhouse gas emissions monitoring from space, complemented from 2022 by aircraft carrying the same patented sensor.

Products and positioning

Independent and actionable methane emissions data at the site level that empowers industries and governments to make confident operational, regulatory, and financial decisions.

  • Satellite Emissions Monitoring

Independent, repeatable satellite measurements to identify and quantify industrial methane emissions across asset portfolios.

  • Airborne Emissions Monitoring

Targeted, high-resolution airborne methane monitoring to pinpoint sources and support mitigation and verification.

  • Third-party Global Survey

Selected third-party methane datasets integrated with GHGSat measurements to expand coverage and provide context for comparing emissions across portfolios.
