Overview
Gidor SA, trading as GIDOR Coiffure, is the largest hairdressing chain in Switzerland. Headquartered in Baar, the family-owned group traces its origins to 1957, when founder Louis Giger sen. opened his first salon at Lindenplatz in Zurich-Altstetten. That shop was the first business in the country to offer haircuts without an appointment at low prices. In 1975 Giger consolidated his salons into the newly founded Gidor SA; the name combines the family name Giger ("gi") with the French word d'or ("gold"). Today Gidor operates more than 95 branches across Switzerland, an online shop called clickandcare.ch, its own GIDOR Academy, and several other hairdressing and beauty labels. The group employs over 1,000 people, including around 250 apprentices, making it one of the industry's most significant employers. Its salons are positioned around quality, modern premises, well-trained staff and attractive prices, with special youth offers and discounts. Gidor also sells its own haircare line, Louis Philipp Private Haircare, launched in 2017. Since 2004 the company has been led by the founder's sons, Louis Giger jun. and Philipp Giger, who own the business. Expansion is self-financed and the company remains independent. Gidor has been a partner of the Coop Supercard loyalty programme since 2003 — the first business outside the Coop Group to join — and has been a member of STUcard since 2015. In 2025 Gidor celebrated its 50th anniversary, describing itself as the largest family-run hairdressing company in Switzerland.
History
The roots of Gidor go back to 1957, when Louis Giger sen. (1928–2018) opened his first hairdressing salon at Lindenplatz in Zurich-Altstetten. It was the first business in Switzerland to offer haircuts without an appointment at low prices. A year later Giger owned two shops, and over the following years he added more. In 1975 Giger bundled his salons into the newly founded Gidor SA. The name is derived from the family name Giger ("gi") and the French word d'or ("gold"). Gidor continued to open additional shops in the years that followed. Its low-price strategy drew resentment from competitors, who pressured suppliers to boycott Gidor under threat of losing their own orders. Despite this, Gidor prevailed. The chain initially specialised mainly in ladies' hairstyles, which still account for around two-thirds of its clientele; specific offers for men followed later. In 2003 Gidor became the first business outside the Coop Group to join Coop's Supercard customer loyalty programme. Since 2004 the company has been led by the founder's two sons, Louis Giger jun. and Philipp Giger, who today own the business. In 2017 Gidor founded its own brand, Louis Philipp Private Haircare, to support individual consultation in its salons with high-quality products from its own house and to make the salon hair experience available at home. The company also operates the online shop clickandcare.ch and the GIDOR Academy. In 2025 Gidor celebrated its 50th anniversary, describing itself as the largest family-run hairdressing company in Switzerland, with over 95 branches, 1,000 employees (including 250 apprentices), and a broad range of haircare products. Expansion is self-financed and the company remains independent.
