Overview
Gifu Tanmen BBC Co., Ltd. is a Japanese restaurant operating company headquartered in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture. It runs a portfolio of ramen and tanmen chains, most prominently Gifu Tanmen, Capusaimen, and Hakata Ramen Baribari-ken, mainly across the Tokai region (Gifu, Aichi, and Mie prefectures) and increasingly in neighboring prefectures such as Nagano, Toyama, Fukui, Shizuoka, and Ishikawa. The company traces its origins to September 2004, when Hakata Ramen Baribari-ken was founded in Ichinomiya, Aichi. In January 2007 the operating company Baribari Company Co., Ltd. was established. The Gifu Tanmen brand began as a yatai (street stall) called Tanmen Specialty Shop Itaya in Inazawa, Aichi, in April 2009, and later evolved into the store-based Gifu Tanmen chain after a shop-format location opened in Gifu City in February 2010. The company renamed itself Gifu Tanmen BBC Co., Ltd. in June 2019 and moved its headquarters to its current Ichinomiya address. As of August 2026, the company reported 46 stores and 1,324 employees, of whom 100 are full-time. Its menu centers on tanmen (a vegetable-rich ramen style), spicy Capusaimen, Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen, and related side dishes and limited-edition items. The company has also diversified into formats such as Gifu Tanmachi Chuka (tanmen plus Chinese diner menu), Tokubetsu Gifu Tanmen (store-limited rice bowls), and an aburasoba specialist called Aburasoba Senmon Koike. In April 2025 it entered a capital and business alliance with MSD Corporate Investment Co., Ltd., and founder Takayasu Usami stepped down as chairman to become an advisor. The company is private and not listed on a stock exchange.
History
The company now known as Gifu Tanmen BBC Co., Ltd. began in September 2004 when Hakata Ramen Baribari-ken was founded in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture. In January 2007, the operating company Baribari Company Co., Ltd. was established. In April 2009, the company opened Tanmen Specialty Shop Itaya in Inazawa, Aichi, as a yatai (street stall). At the time, tanmen was not a common style in the Tokai region, and the stall struggled to attract customers. Facing possible closure, the company opened a store-format location called Gento Tanmen-ya in Gifu City in February 2010, which gradually gained popularity. Out of gratitude to customers who had traveled from Gifu Prefecture to support the struggling Itaya stall, the company renamed all its stores Gifu Tanmen. The chain expanded across Aichi and Gifu prefectures through the 2010s, opening locations such as Gifu Tanmen Gifu Main Store (2010), Ogaki (2011), Maeichishiki (2012), Imaise (2013), Ichinomiya Inter (2014), Tajimi (2014), Komaki (2015), Ichinomiya Inter No. 2 (2016), Moriyama Ryusenji (2016), Nagara (2017), Nagakute (2017), 21-go Akana (2018), Tokai (2018), Kakamigahara (2018), and Minokamo (2018). In 2017, the company opened Age Tanmen. In June 2019, the company changed its name to Gifu Tanmen BBC Co., Ltd. and relocated its headquarters to its current address in Ichinomiya. In April 2020, the company launched a new format, Capusaimen, in Ichinomiya, and in the same month, Takayasu Usami became Representative Director and Chairman while Maki Shimazu became Representative Director and President. The company continued to open Gifu Tanmen stores in Seto (2020), Seki (2020), Minato (2020), Tenpaku (2021), Matsumoto (2021), Toyota (2021), Suzuka (2022), Toyama (2022), Hamamatsu (2023), Yokkaichi (2023), Fukui (2024), Okazaki (2024), and others. It also diversified with Gifu Tanmachi Chuka (2022), Needs-ken (2022), and Aburasoba Senmon Koike (2025). In April 2025, the company entered a capital and business alliance with MSD Corporate Investment Co., Ltd., and Usami stepped down as chairman to become an advisor. As of August 2026, the company reported 46 stores and 1,324 employees, including 100 full-time staff. It continues to expand, with new locations planned or opened in Toyohashi (2026), Nagoya Nakagawa (2026), and Kawanakajima (2026).
