The history page of Gigasport traces the company's history back over 150 years, starting from the sporting goods department in the Kastner & Öhler traditional house. In 1873, the 24-year-old accountant Carl Kastner and the 26-year-old salesman Hermann Öhler founded the 'Kurzwarenhandlung Kastner & Öhler' in Troppau (today Opava in the Czech Republic) on 1 April 1873. In 1883, Carl Kastner missed his connecting train in Graz and discovered an empty shop at today's Sackstraße 7, which he rented immediately, creating the Graz parent house. With the founding of the larger locations Zagreb (1879) and Graz and the expansion into a department store, sports articles also found their way into the assortment. In 1973, with the 100th anniversary of Kastner & Öhler, the actual history of sports began: the renovation of the Graz parent house was completed and it presented itself with four upper floors, escalators and new staircases, but above all with its own sports department under the name 'Kastner & Öhler Sporthaus'. In 1978, the first Sporthaus opened in Klagenfurt, beginning the specialization of Kastner & Öhler in the sports sector. In 1982, as part of a further renovation of the Graz location, a separate Sporthaus with 2,500 m² of sales area was created, at that time the largest in the country.
