Overview
Gijutsu-Hyohron Co., Ltd. (株式会社技術評論社) is a Japanese publishing house founded in March 1969 and headquartered in Tokyo. It is best known for publishing computer-related books and magazines, and for operating the technology web media gihyo.jp. The company began with the monthly production-technology magazine Gekkan Gijutsu-Hyohron in 1969 and later shifted its focus toward computing and software development titles. Over the decades it built a broad catalogue of magazines, mook series, and book lines covering programming, operating systems, networking, security, IT certification, and general computing. Its magazine portfolio has included Software Design (launched 1990), WEB+DB PRESS (launched 2000), and Security Expert, among others. Many of its titles are published as mooks and series such as Software Design plus, WEB+DB PRESS plus, Pocket Reference, and the "Kore kara hajimeru" beginner series. The company also publishes IT certification study materials, including information-processing examination guides. In April 2007 Gijutsu-Hyohron opened the online media gihyo.jp, which publishes technical articles, news, and event reports for engineers, designers, and business users of IT. According to the site's own advertising information, gihyo.jp underwent a major renewal in 2022 marking its 15th anniversary, and it offers tie-up articles, rectangle advertising, and email newsletter placements. The site covers genres including OS and desktop, front-end and back-end development, general programming, machine learning and AI, devices and IoT, science and mathematics, design and illustration, business skills, and hobby and internet services. Gijutsu-Hyohron also operates the e-book sales site Gihyo Digital Publishing, opened in August 2011. The company has expanded beyond strict computer publishing into general, business, and practical books, and it has been involved in events and contests, including co-hosting an AR application developer contest with KDDI in 2012. It remains a privately held Japanese publisher with a strong reputation as a source of technical books and information for engineers.
History
Gijutsu-Hyohron Co., Ltd. was established in March 1969 in Kojimachi 6-chome, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, with capital of 700,000 yen. In September 1969 it launched the monthly production-technology magazine Gekkan Gijutsu-Hyohron. The company moved its office to Nibancho, Chiyoda Ward in January 1963 (as recorded in its corporate history), then to Hirakawacho, Chiyoda Ward in April 1977. In 1986 its advertising division became independent as Gijutsu-Hyohron Advertising (later Village Center, now dissolved). In May 1989 a new head office building was completed at 8-8 Aizumicho, Shinjuku Ward. In November 1990 the company launched the IT technology magazine Software Design. In December 2000 it launched the IT technology magazine WEB+DB PRESS. In April 2002 it established the affiliated company Megtec Co., Ltd. and moved to 3-1-1 Kamiosaki, Shinagawa Ward. In March 2004 it published the free information magazine Denno Tsushin on the web. In March 2007 it moved to 21-13 Ichigaya-Sanaicho, Shinjuku Ward. In April 2007 it opened the online media gihyo.jp. In response to the shrinking computer-book market, it has entered the general, business, and practical book fields; Baka Nihon Chizu became a smash hit. In 1993 Koei (now Koei Tecmo) sued over a program included as an appendix to the unofficial Sangokushi III guidebook; Gijutsu-Hyohron ultimately won in the Supreme Court in 2001 (the Sangokushi III case).
