Overview

GINX TV, also known as GINX.TV and GINX Esports TV, is a United Kingdom-based media group focused on video-game and esports coverage. The business was founded in 2007 by Alistair Gosling, Udi Shapira, and Cosmo Spens. Gosling had previously founded the Extreme Sports Channel, while GINX was established around the opportunity to create a dedicated television and digital outlet for gaming culture, game releases, competitive play, news, reviews, and related entertainment. The television channel launched in August 2008 on Romania's Boom TV satellite platform. During its early years, GINX pursued an international distribution strategy rather than limiting itself to the United Kingdom. Its programming reached parts of Europe, Southeast Asia, East Africa, and other territories through local pay-TV operators and third-party broadcasters. The channel was represented by Dori Media Group in Indonesia and Turkey, and its programming was carried by outlets including TVNZ U in New Zealand, Zee Trendz in India, OSN in the Middle East and North Africa, and EGO in Israel. A high-definition simulcast appeared temporarily on Hispasat 1E in 2011, and the channel later returned to HD distribution through StarHub TV in Singapore. GINX spent several years preparing for a British launch. In 2010 it announced plans to reach viewers in the United Kingdom and Ireland through platforms including Sky and Virgin Media, with Red Bee Media appointed to develop a new visual identity and on-screen presentation. Although the launch was delayed, the channel became available through BT Vision's video-on-demand service in May 2011 and later launched on Virgin Media in July 2013. Its programming mix during this period included gaming news, reviews, previews, charts, genre-focused shows, retro coverage, documentaries, comedy, interviews, and instructional content. The company's most significant strategic change came in 2016, when GINX announced a partnership with Sky and ITV and repositioned the channel as GINX Esports TV. The relaunch, which took place on 24 June 2016, placed esports at the center of the service while retaining broader gaming coverage. This shift reflected the growing commercial importance of competitive video games, livestreaming, esports personalities, and organized tournaments. GINX subsequently expanded through partnerships in Canada, Israel, Europe, and South Africa. GINX Esports TV Canada launched through Super Channel in May 2017, while a South African service was developed with DStv and SuperSport. The brand also entered Israel through Partner's 4GTV application and pursued European satellite distribution through Telekom Austria Group and Eutelsat 16A. Alongside its television operations, GINX develops and distributes content through its website, social channels, streaming platforms, and production arm, GINX Studios. The company has created material for its own services as well as third-party publishers, media organizations, brands, and esports organizations. Its programming has included original magazine shows, esports analysis, game reviews, documentaries, interviews, countdowns, gameplay formats, and live or studio-based productions. In January 2022, GINX began broadcasting programming on Twitch, reinforcing its transition toward platform-diverse digital distribution. The television business has continued to change as viewing habits and distribution agreements evolved. GINX ended its contract with Virgin Media in 2018. In June 2023, the United Kingdom version ceased satellite broadcasting but continued through Sky Glass and Sky Stream. The channel later launched as an IPTV service on Freeview channel 296 in July 2024, but that service closed on 22 January 2025. In South Africa, the DStv channel closed by 31 March 2024, with additional content continuing through GINX+. These closures indicate a move away from some conventional linear distribution arrangements rather than the disappearance of the broader GINX digital brand. GINX's present identity is therefore best understood as a gaming and esports content business spanning television, online publishing, video production, and streaming distribution.

History

GINX TV was formed in 2007 by Alistair Gosling, Udi Shapira, and Cosmo Spens as a media venture devoted to video-game content. The channel began broadcasting in August 2008 through Romania's Boom TV satellite platform. Its early development emphasized international distribution, with availability or content relationships extending across Europe, Southeast Asia, East Africa, and other regions. GINX used local operators and representatives to distribute the channel, while also licensing individual programs to outside broadcasters and media platforms. The company developed a varied gaming format library. Its shows covered news, reviews, previews, game charts, retro titles, mobile applications, genres such as racing and role-playing, gaming culture, interviews, documentaries, and instructional play. Early and later programs included GameFace, The Blurb, Faster, Gamesport, The Ginx Vault, Planet of the Apps, Videogame Nation, Under the Radar, and The First Hour. This broad editorial mix allowed GINX to address both casual players and dedicated enthusiasts before esports became the dominant part of its positioning. GINX's British rollout took several stages. Plans announced in 2010 targeted Sky and Virgin Media, but the launch was delayed. A video-on-demand service became available through BT Vision in May 2011, and the linear channel eventually launched on Virgin Media on 9 July 2013. During the same period, GINX programming was distributed by third parties including TVNZ U, Zee Trendz, OSN, and EGO. In December 2011, the company also licensed selected content to the American gaming website The Escapist. In 2015, GINX entered a temporary partnership with DStv to create an esports channel in South Africa. The service returned in 2017 through a partnership with SuperSport and DStv that provided a dedicated channel. The company's wider strategic direction changed in June 2016, when GINX announced a partnership with Sky and ITV and relaunched as GINX Esports TV. The relaunch took place on 24 June 2016 and gave competitive gaming a much more prominent place in the channel's schedule and identity. The esports repositioning supported further international expansion. Super Channel announced a Canadian version in February 2017, and GINX Esports TV Canada launched on 4 May 2017 with the live program The Bridge and a mixture of domestic and parent-channel content. GINX also launched in Israel through Partner's 4GTV app in 2017. In October of the same year it announced a distribution partnership with Telekom Austria Group for European availability through Eutelsat 16A. Distribution arrangements continued to evolve. GINX ended its contract with Virgin Media in October 2018. In January 2022 it began broadcasting programming on Twitch, extending the brand into a major livestreaming environment. On 24 June 2023, the company announced that its United Kingdom channel would stop satellite transmission on 29 June, while continuing through Sky Glass and Sky Stream. It subsequently launched as an IPTV service on Freeview channel 296 on 17 July 2024, but that service closed on 22 January 2025. The South African channel also closed by 31 March 2024, with further content available through GINX+. The business therefore evolved from a conventional specialist television channel into a broader digital gaming and esports publisher and producer.
