Overview
GIVA Group — the acronym of Gruppo Industriale Vienna Antonio — is an Italian family-owned heavy metallurgy group founded by Antonio Vienna and rooted in the forges he and his brothers established in the Milan area in the early 1960s. The group describes itself as a worldwide leader in the manufacturing of steel products, including ingots, forging, valves and actuators, and it operates as a network of complementary industrial plants concentrated in Northern Italy while serving international commercial relationships. Its end markets span power generation, nuclear, oil and gas, petrochemical, mechanical engineering and shipbuilding. The group grew largely by acquiring and integrating Italian metallurgical companies. Its first significant acquisition was Ofar in 1980, followed by La Valvomeccanica, Italfond, OFP, Bresciacciai, Forges, VRM, RMT Valves, Nunki Steel and others. Today GIVA controls a significant number of independent companies integrated into one industrial network, with more than 1,400 employees from about 20 different countries, 19 modern and highly specialized production plants in Northern Italy, more than 200 manipulators, furnaces and machining centers, 15 open-die forging presses and 6 ring rolling machines. A sales network of more than 20 domestic and on-site offices delivers products and services to all continents through one-stop-shop access points. GIVA is known for record-breaking forging equipment. In 2013 its Tyson open-die hydraulic forging press became the first press in the world to reach 100,000 tonnes of force; the group also operates what it describes as the world's largest electro-slag remelting (ESR) unit, capable of producing 250-tonne ingots, and the world's largest ring rolling mill, Calam 2, able to roll steel shells 10 metres in diameter and 5 metres high. In 2025 the Olga hydraulic press matched the record set by Tyson. The group remains owned by the founder's family and is committed to sustainability, publishing an annual Sustainability Report prepared voluntarily under Global Reporting Initiative Standards, with greenhouse gas reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
History
GIVA's history begins in the early 1960s in the Milan area. In 1961 the Vienna brothers founded Forgia di Bollate (FDB) in Bollate, in the Metropolitan City of Milan. In 1962 Antonio Vienna set up the first workshop of Forgiatura A. Vienna in Rho, a few kilometres away. These two forges form the industrial roots of what would become the GIVA Group, an acronym of Gruppo Industriale Vienna Antonio. The group expanded through a long series of acquisitions and integrations of Italian metallurgical companies. In 1980 it made its first significant merger-acquisition by taking over Ofar, a group of forges also founded in 1961. That same year La Valvomeccanica, active in plug valve production since 1946, joined Mr. Vienna's industrial network. In 1988 Italfond, a steel mill founded in 1962, was acquired by GIVA. In 1989 OFP, founded in 1986, joined the group to support the forges with rough and final machining. In 1990 Bresciacciai started its activity within the group in Visano (Brescia) in the steel plates market. In 1994 Forges, located in Cividale del Friuli (Udine), joined GIVA as the fourth forge plant of the group, and VRM was acquired for rough machining activities. In 1998 RMT Valves was established by GIVA as a trading valves company in Baranzate di Bollate (Milan). In 2007 DVG Automation was established within the group to support the valves market by producing valve actuators. In 2008 RMT Valves and La Valvomeccanica merged, and Nunki Steel was acquired and reconverted into a steel ingot producer. In 2009 Metab was opened next to Ofar to serve the company with final machining. In 2013 TTV was added to support the production of finish machined shells and rings. In 2019 the structure was rationalized: Ofar integrated Forges (the Cividale del Friuli forge acquired in 1994), and Forgiatura A. Vienna integrated two machining workshops for forging blanks, OFP and TTV (acquired in 1989 and 2013 respectively). On 13 December 2023 Pibiviesse, a specialist in on/off shut-off valves based in Nerviano, was acquired by RMT Valvomeccanica and joined the GIVA group. By 2024 the group employed 1,400 employees across 19 production sites. The group is known for its record-breaking forging tools. In 2013 the Tyson open-die hydraulic forging press became the first press in the world to reach 100,000 tonnes of force. It also operates what it describes as the world's largest electro-slag remelting (ESR) unit, capable of producing 250-tonne ingots, and the world's largest ring rolling mill, named Calam 2, able to roll steel shells 10 metres in diameter and 5 metres high. In 2025 the Olga hydraulic press matched the record established by Tyson; it is a die-forging press, so it ranks ex aequo, with Tyson's record still unbeaten. GIVA remains owned by the family of founder Antonio Vienna (1937–2023). The group has long believed that integrating sustainability into business strategies is key to its long-term vision, and it voluntarily publishes an annual Sustainability Report following Global Reporting Initiative Standards. Its greenhouse gas reduction targets, covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, received official validation by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), positioning GIVA among the first forging companies with both near-term and net-zero goals approved. DNV has carried out an independent verification of GIVA S.p.A. greenhouse gas emissions for the year 2024.
