Overview

Gizeh Verpackungen is a German industrial group that develops, manufactures and decorates plastic packaging, primarily for the food, confectionery and cosmetics industries. Its headquarters are in Bergneustadt in the Oberbergischer Kreis district of North Rhine-Westphalia, and it operates as a family-owned business under the name Gizeh Verpackungen GmbH & Co. KG. The company traces its roots to the cigarette-paper industry: the Gizeh Zigarettenpapier-Verarbeitungs-Gesellschaft was founded on 2 January 1920 as a spin-off of the paper maker Schoeller & Hoesch, with production initially in Cologne. Wartime bombing forced a move to Bergneustadt, which became the permanent home and, from 1955, the group's main site. Gizeh moved into packaging in the post-war decades, starting with paraffin-coated paper packaging for the dairy industry in 1958 and adding injection-moulded and thermoformed plastic packaging from 1964. The tobacco-related business was separated in 1997 and sold to the Dutch Mignot & De Block group, and in 1998 the Jung entrepreneurial family took over the remaining packaging company. Since then Gizeh has grown into one of Europe's leading manufacturers of plastic packaging, serving customers such as Ferrero, Nestlé, Danone, Unilever, Schwartau and Homann Feinkost. According to the company, roughly four billion food containers made by GIZEH reach retailers every year. The group's core competence is what it calls "Customized Cup Solutions": the development, production and decoration of customer-specific packaging solutions. Its plants use injection moulding, thermoforming, injection stretch blow moulding, in-mould labelling, off-mould labelling, shrink-sleeving and direct printing. Production sites are located in Bergneustadt and Elsterwerda in Germany, Tarnowo Podgórne in Poland, Angers in France and Brantford in Canada, giving the group a European manufacturing base plus a North American foothold. A dedicated subsidiary, Gizeh PET GmbH, produces PET bottles and containers. Gizeh is a privately held, family-owned group. In 2017 it reported revenue of about 120 million euros and in 2018 employed roughly 800 people. The company invests in apprenticeship and vocational training, operates its own training workshop and, at its Bergneustadt site, opened a company kindergarten called "GIZEH Kids". It also publishes a sustainability report and participates in initiatives such as the BEECITY biodiversity project and the HolyGrail 2.0 digital watermark programme for better packaging sorting.

History

The history of Gizeh Verpackungen begins in the paper industry rather than in packaging. Its prehistory starts in 1881 with the founding of the pulp mill "Schultz & Cie." in the northern Black Forest, which from 1905 also produced cigarette paper. Operating from then on as "Seiden- und Zigarettenpapierfabrik Schoeller & Hoesch GmbH", the company became an expert in fine rag papers and by the early 1920s was among the world's leading cigarette-paper manufacturers. On 2 January 1920, Schoeller & Hoesch spun off its cigarette-paper processing division as the Gizeh Zigarettenpapier-Verarbeitungs-Gesellschaft, initially producing in Cologne. During the Second World War, repeated Allied bombing raids on Cologne forced the company to relocate production to less endangered sites. One of these was Bergneustadt in the Oberbergisches Land region. Production initially took place in premises of the Wahlefeld company in Bergneustadt-Sessinghausen near the Derschlag town boundary, later in Wiedenest and, from 1964, in Bergneustadt am Breiten Weg. After the complete destruction of the Cologne main plant in 1944, the Bergneustadt site was expanded substantially and in 1955, with the construction of a paper mill covering 3,200 square metres, it became the company's headquarters. Three years later, in 1958, Bergneustadt began producing paraffin-coated paper packaging for the dairy industry, and from 1964 Gizeh was also able to supply injection-moulded and thermoformed plastic packaging. Alongside packaging and smoking requisites, the company also produced punched cards, EDP papers and parking tickets. Helmut Förste, managing director of Gizeh-Werk GmbH./Papier- und Kunststoffverarbeitung, was also chairman of the Association of the Cigarette Paper Processing Industry in Bonn. In 1997, following economic difficulties, the smoking requisites division (today Gizeh Raucherbedarf) was spun off and sold to the Dutch Mignot & De Block group. In 1998 the entrepreneurial Jung family took over the remaining company, which today operates as Gizeh Verpackungen GmbH & Co. KG and is one of the leading manufacturers of plastic packaging in Europe. In 2001 the company still employed 350 people and generated revenue of about 30 million euros; nine years later, with 560 employees across five sites, revenue reached about 100 million euros. Its customers include food manufacturers such as Ferrero, Nestlé, Danone, Unilever, Schwartau and Homann Feinkost. Branch operations were established in Tarnowo Podgórne in Poland, in Angers in France (2005) and, from 2004, in Elsterwerda in Brandenburg. Another site existed in Schlatt, Switzerland, where the toolmaking division was located; this site has since been dissolved. In 2013 a plant was founded in Brantford, Canada, from which the North American market is supplied. In autumn 2013 the foundation stone was laid in Senftenberg, Brandenburg, for a site intended to develop and manufacture special tools and machines for plastics processing. Today Gizeh Verpackungen produces at five European sites: the headquarters in Bergneustadt, Germany (injection moulding, thermoforming, injection stretch blow moulding, in-mould labelling, off-mould labelling, shrink-sleeving, direct printing); Elsterwerda, Germany (injection moulding, in-mould labelling, PET); Tarnowo Podgórne, Poland (injection moulding, thermoforming, in-mould labelling, off-mould labelling, direct printing); Angers, France (thermoforming, off-mould labelling, direct printing); and Brantford, Canada. The company produces plastic containers for food, confectionery and cosmetics manufacturers worldwide, mainly using thermoforming and injection moulding. For the production of PET products such as bottles and containers, the subsidiary Gizeh PET GmbH was founded. In 2017 the group generated revenue of about 120 million euros and in 2018 employed roughly 800 people. According to its own website, around four billion food containers made by GIZEH reach the retail trade every year.
