Overview
Glæsibær Shopping Centre (Icelandic: Glæsibær verslunarmiðstöð) is a shopping centre located at Álfheimar 74 in Reykjavík, Iceland. It was taken into use in December 1970 and was at that time the largest shopping centre in Iceland, with a floor area of about 8,300 square metres. The centre was built by the merchants Sigurliði Kristjánsson and Valdimar Þórðarson, known by the names Silli and Valdi, who also operated grocery stores under those names. The grocery store Silla and Valda in Glæsibær was considered very elegant; it covered a thousand square metres and introduced novelties not previously seen in Iceland, such as shopping carts with child seats, alongside a wide product range. The grocery store in Glæsibær was operated under the Silla brand until 1974, when Sláturfélag Suðurlands took over its operation. Later, grocery stores under the 10-11 and Iceland brands were operated in Glæsibær. A number of other stores have been located in Glæsibær, and one of them, the cosmetics store Snyrtivöruverslunin Glæsibær, is the only store that has been operated in the shopping centre continuously since the beginning. In 2002, thorough renovations were made to Glæsibær and the shopping centre was significantly expanded, including with an extension that now houses, among other things, medical offices and a fitness centre as well as other companies. In 2006, the Glæsibær health centre (Heilsugæslustöðin í Glæsibæ) began operations, serving residents of nearby neighbourhoods. In 2018, a large Nexus store opened in Glæsibær. The centre maintains an official website, glaesibaer.is, which provides information on opening hours, services, stores, and restaurants and dining places within the centre, as well as store locations. A new website was launched on 27 October 2021, replacing its predecessor after several years of service. The site also hosts the centre's privacy policy.
