Overview

G.L. Kayser Spedition was founded in 1787 by Georg Ludwig Kayser in Mainz as a banking, trading, and forwarding house. It was the oldest company in Mainz and, after Merck, the oldest company in Germany. The firm remained in family ownership for over eight generations until 2007, and with more than 900 employees it ranked among the larger companies in the city of Mainz. For much of its history, the company's transport operations were based on shipping along the Rhine. From 1930 onward, it began building up truck transport. In 1960 it entered international freight forwarding. A proprietary in-house IT software was developed in 1973. In 1981 the company started building up warehouse logistics. In 1987 it moved from the Mainz customs port to a new facility in Mainz-Hechtsheim, and also began cooperations with IDS and German Parcel. In 1992 a further cooperation was started with EAST as a groupage system for Eastern Europe. The company's business area in freight transport was mainly domestic and European, but also included overseas traffic. It operated subsidiaries including G.L. Kayser Kontraktlogistik GmbH (based in Mainz-Hechtsheim) and G.L. Kayser Airfreight Services GmbH (based at Frankfurt am Main Airport), and held a stake in Xanto. As of 31 October 2007, the Swiss logistics group Kühne + Nagel, which had moved its Rhine-Main location to Mainz at the beginning of 2007, took over the company G.L. Kayser. With effect from 1 July 2010, G.L. Kayser Spediteur seit 1787 GmbH & Co. KG operates under the name Kühne + Nagel (AG & Co.) KG, Zweigniederlassung Mainz. The G.L. Kayser brand thus continues as part of Kühne + Nagel's Mainz branch.
