Overview

Glasmalerei Peters GmbH is a stained glass workshop based in Paderborn, in the East Westphalia region of Germany. Founded in 1912 by Otto Peters, the company has remained a family business for more than a century and is now led by the third and fourth generations. Its workshop combines the preservation of traditional craft techniques with experimental and innovative approaches to glass, guided by the motto "Plus Ultra" (ever further). The firm's activities span new artistic glass creations for sacred and secular buildings, restoration and conservation of historic stained glass, reconstruction, protective glazing, concrete glass (Betonglas), mosaic work, and art transport. It collaborates closely with glass artists and designers from Germany and abroad, and its project portfolio includes works in Europe and North America. Glasmalerei Peters is particularly recognized for its restoration and conservation work on significant heritage sites, including the Gothic west window of Altenberg Cathedral, windows of Seville Cathedral, and a window of Notre-Dame de Chartres in France. Its new commissions include the "Lux Nova" wind tower at the University of Vancouver and projects such as a primary school in Portland, Oregon, and the Avenue Branch Library in San José, California. The company is headquartered at Am Hilligenbusch 25 in Paderborn and operates internationally. It remains a privately held family enterprise, with Jan Wilhelm Peters serving as managing director since 2008 and his sister Christine Peters joining the business in 2013.

History

Glasmalerei Peters was founded in 1912 in Paderborn by Otto Peters. In 1936, his son Emil Peters took over the leadership of the company and expanded its activities internationally. From 1980, the business was led by the third generation, Wilhelm Peters, who had studied art and art education in Hamburg. Under his direction the workshop continued to grow and gained recognition for both new artistic commissions and restoration work. In 2008, Jan Wilhelm Peters, a business economist who had studied glass processing with a focus on stained glass and gained practical experience at specialist glass firms worldwide, joined the management as the fourth generation. His sister Christine Peters, also a business economist with international experience, joined the company in 2013. Wilhelm Peters led the firm until 2018. In October 2017, he was awarded the Cultural Prize of the City of Paderborn. Over the decades, the workshop has built a broad portfolio. It carries out new stained glass creations in all known processing techniques and maintains intensive collaborations with glass artists such as Wilhelm Buschulte, Clemens Hillebrand, Tobias Kammerer, Vincenz Pieper, Jochem Poensgen, Johannes Schreiter, Alexander Beleschenko and Martin Donlin. International projects in innovative techniques include "Lux Nova", a wind tower on the campus of the University of Vancouver, a primary school in Portland, Oregon, the Avenue Branch Library in San José, California, and the district town hall in Antwerp-Deurne. A particular focus is the restoration and reconstruction of historic stained glass. The company gained worldwide recognition for the restoration and conservation of the Gothic west window of Altenberg Cathedral, the windows of Seville Cathedral, and the restoration of a window of Notre-Dame de Chartres in France. The firm describes itself as a healthy family business now led by the third and fourth generations, active for over 100 years, and committed to the motto "Plus Ultra" — always going one or more steps further and experimenting for its clients.
