Overview

The Glass Walls Project (Hebrew: קירות שקופים) is an Israeli nonprofit organization founded in October 2014 by Tal Gilboa and Roee Shefarnik. Its stated purpose is to document and expose the suffering of animals in industries that produce products of animal origin. The organization's name is taken from a quotation attributed to Linda McCartney: "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, the whole world would go vegetarian." The group operates as an advocacy and investigative body rather than a commercial manufacturer, using undercover documentation, lectures, films and social-media distribution to raise awareness about the environmental damage caused by animal-food industries and the contribution of plant-based nutrition to human health. Since 2013, activists associated with the organization have documented industrial facilities in Israel, conducted undercover investigations, held lectures and distributed videos on social networks. According to the organization, by early 2020 it had documented conditions in most of Israel's moshavim and kibbutzim, some of them more than once. The footage gathered was developed into a lecture titled "Glass Walls," intended to expose the Israeli public to the plight of animals in the animal-products industry. The lecture toured the country and was later edited into a film distributed online, which had been viewed about 2.7 million times as of January 2020. A subsequent lecture, "Planted in Hell," was created together with investigator Ronen Bar and describes both the documented suffering of animals and the psychological difficulties involved in such documentation. The organization also works to expose capital-government-food ties in Israel and produced a film of that name. In 2017, an investigator for the Glass Walls Project worked for three months at a hatchery of Kvutzat Yavne and conducted a covert investigation, documenting abuse of day-old chicks; the material was edited into a film posted on the organization's YouTube channel. That same year, an activist worked at the "Bekarna Basar HaKfar" slaughterhouse in Haifa and documented conditions there over eight months. The organization raised more than 260,000 shekels to publicize the footage. The project was called "the investigation that shakes the country" and was first broadcast on the television program "HaTzinor" on Channel 2 on 25 October 2017. An uncensored video of the investigation was later posted to the Glass Walls Project's YouTube channel. The organization subsequently produced four additional videos in which Israeli celebrities watch the investigation and react to it, including Yair Netanyahu, Yuval Shem-Tov, Shimi Tavori, Guy Maroz, Lihi Griner, Michel Troni, Dalik Volinitz and Gadi Wilczerski. Other films produced by the organization include "Milk Stained with Blood," about the dairy industry in relation to both practices applied to cows and health, and "The Deception," about the poultry and egg industry. Campaigns around both films included paid advertising and billboards. Ahead of the Shavuot holiday in 2019, the organization produced a campaign called "The Vegan Bus," in which posters calling for celebrating the holiday with plant-based food instead of dairy products were pasted on both sides of a bus. The bus traveled around the country, and at its stops activists stood beside it, provided information and distributed recipes. In June 2019, Gilboa ended her role at the organization and began working with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as his personal adviser on animal affairs, while Shefarnik continued the ongoing management of the organization. The organization has held several large conferences dealing with animals, veganism and activism. The conferences included lectures, panels, performances, food stalls and other stalls, and summarized the previous year's activities and goals and strategy for the future.
