Its history begins in 1888, when Max Winkelmann founded a lacquers and paints company in Hamburg. In 1898, Max Winkelmann became Glasurit, and the Glasurit trade name was registered over 100 years ago. The brand's name and iconic scarlet macaw stand for highest quality standards, world-class products and exceptional services. Glasurit states that Surventis (formerly BASF Coatings) is now an independent surface technology company, and Glasurit remains a trusted brand for premium automotive refinish coatings.

In 1888 Max Winkelmann founded a lacquers and paints company in Hamburg. Soon after he also created his own paint factory. In 1893, Max's first paint was marketed using the name Crystal White. This white enamel was originally used for ocean liners, and he soon expanded. Customers for his quality products included not only the major shipyards and the German Kaiser, but also the Hamburg tram transport company. In 1898, Max Winkelmann became Glasurit. Ten years after founding the business, Winkelmann was already making so many different products that he wished to sell them under one name. The Glasurit trade name was registered over 100 years ago. The name ("Glasur" means glaze or enamel) reflects the enamel-like glaze and hardness of paint finishes and promises quality.
