Overview

Gleiwitzer Hütte is an alpine shelter hut (Schutzhütte) located at 2,176 metres above sea level on the northern edge of the Glocknergruppe, within the Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria. It sits in the rear Hirzbachtal, a side valley of the Fuscher Tal, below the dominant peaks of the Hoher Tenn, between the Kapruner Tal and Fuscher Tal. The hut is operated by the Tittmoning Section of the Deutscher Alpenverein (German Alpine Club) and serves as a mountain refuge offering simple meals, drinks and overnight accommodation for hikers and climbers. The hut was built by the Gleiwitz Section of the DuOeAV and ceremonially opened on 22 July 1900. It was not operated during World War I but survived the war years almost undamaged, although the section's activities ceased entirely during that period. From 1949 to 1954 the hut was alternately managed by the sections Zell am See, Rohrbach im Mühlkreis and Amstetten, during which time it was known as the "Hoch-Tenn-Hütte". In 1954 the Gleiwitz Section was re-established in Lübeck and the hut was returned to it. The Austrian Alpine Club was registered as owner in the land register in 1962. From 1967 the Gleiwitz Section was no longer able to manage the hut alone and offered its care to the Tittmoning Section; in 1968 the DAV transferred the hut from the ÖAV and the Gleiwitz and Tittmoning sections agreed on joint management. In 1972 the DAV offered the high-alpine shelter for sale to the Tittmoning Section, which acquired it. The Burghausen Section of the DAV maintains a hut sponsorship. The hut is typically open continuously from mid-June to late September, weather permitting. For the 2026 season, Silke Lange is the new hut warden (Hüttenwirtin). The official website lists planned 2026 dates including the summer solstice on 20 June, a mountain service on 19 July (rescheduled to 30 August), and the hut closing on 26 September. The hut provides a cosy stop and various overnight options, and is a popular starting point for mountain tours and a base for hikers. As of the website's current information, showers are not possible due to very little water at the hut.

History

The Gleiwitzer Hütte was built by the Gleiwitz Section of the DuOeAV (German and Austrian Alpine Club) after the section was founded in 1894. The decision to erect a shelter in the Hirzbachtal soon matured, and the hut was ceremonially opened on 22 July 1900. During World War I the hut was not operated, but it survived the war years almost undamaged; however, the section's activities ceased completely during this time. From 1949 to 1954, the sections Zell am See, Rohrbach im Mühlkreis and Amstetten alternately took over the care of the Gleiwitzer Hütte, and during this period it was named "Hoch-Tenn-Hütte". In 1954 the Gleiwitz Section was re-established in Lübeck and the hut was returned to it. In 1962 the Austrian Alpine Club (Österreichischer Alpenverein) was registered as owner in the land register. From 1967 the Gleiwitz Section was no longer able to manage the hut alone and offered its care to the Tittmoning Section. In 1968 the DAV (German Alpine Club) transferred the hut from the ÖAV, and the Gleiwitz and Tittmoning sections agreed on joint hut management. In 1972 the DAV offered the high-alpine shelter for sale to the Tittmoning Section, which acquired it. The Burghausen Section of the DAV maintains a hut sponsorship. Today the hut is operated by the Tittmoning Section of the Deutscher Alpenverein as a shelter with unique views, offering a cosy stop and various overnight options. It is continuously managed from about mid-June to the end of September and serves as a perfect starting point for various mountain tours and a base for hikers. For the 2026 season, Silke Lange is the new hut warden.
