Overview

Global Action Plan International is described as a global network of organisations that work together to implement approaches empowering people worldwide to adopt truly sustainable lifestyles. Its stated mission is to be a global behaviour change catalyst. The network is described as a diverse international network of organisations sharing the belief that radical changes to consumption are needed to address environmental and social challenges, with each member organisation being an independent entity responsible for designing and delivering its own programmes and for its financing and financial management. Network members design and deliver behaviour change programmes that reduce impact on the planet, using research insight and evaluated to measure impact. The network acts as a global catalyst, sharing successful approaches, tools and programmes with members who adapt them for local delivery. The GAP International network was formed in the late 1980s, and its founders used computer modelling to demonstrate that changing behaviours in the developed world could pave the way for a more sustainable future, leading to the birth of Ecoteams, a model to reduce household resource use, trialled first in the US and the Netherlands.

History

The GAP International network was formed in the late 1980s on a shared belief that a radical change to human consumption patterns across the globe was needed to avoid the irreversible destruction of the planet. The founders of GAP used computer modelling to demonstrate that changing the behaviours of people in the developed world could pave the way for a more sustainable future, and they set about trying to create compelling evidence that this could be done in advance of the Rio Summit in 1992. This led to the birth of Ecoteams, a model to reduce household resource use, which was trialled first in the US and the Netherlands before broadening its scope to the rapidly growing network of GAP member countries.
