Overview
The Global Coral Reef Alliance (GCRA) is a small, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1990, dedicated to scientific research and sustainable management of coral reefs. It is a worldwide coalition of volunteer scientists, divers, environmentalists and other individuals and organizations committed to coral reef preservation. GCRA focuses primarily on coral reef restoration and cutting-edge research on coral bleaching, global warming, marine diseases, sea level rise and pollution. It invented and developed Mineral Accretion Technology™, the Biorock™ method of electrical coral reef and marine ecosystem restoration, and the HotSpot™ method to predict coral bleaching from satellite sea surface temperatures. GCRA works with community groups, environmental organizations, foundations, governments and private firms to build, restore and maintain coral reefs, nurseries and marine sanctuaries.
History
The Global Coral Reef Alliance was founded in 1990. It is described as the direct heir to a pioneering coral reef research tradition stretching back to the 1920s, and holds the world's largest collection of coral reef photographs from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. GCRA did much of the original work on coral disease and harmful algae blooms, pioneered integrated whole ecosystem and coastal zone nutrient management that later became called 'Ridge to Reef', 'Hilltop to Ocean', 'Mountain to Sea', etc., invented and developed the Coral Bleaching HotSpot method to accurately predict coral bleaching caused by global warming, and invented and developed Biorock™ technology for restoring coral reefs and all marine ecosystems. It directly trains local environmental management groups worldwide to assess and solve their critical marine ecosystem problems and regenerate dying habitats.
