Overview
The Glorer Hütte is an alpine shelter of Category I belonging to the Eichstätt-Neuburg section of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV). It stands at 2,642 metres above sea level on the Berger Törl, the culmination point of a crossing between Kals am Großglockner in East Tyrol and Heiligenblut in Carinthia, on the border between the Glockner and Schober groups. Originally conceived as a refuge for the long transition from Kals to Heiligenblut, it remains important today as a shelter for mountaineers on the Wiener Höhenweg. Despite its high-alpine location, the hut is also an ideal starting point for hikes and family tours, offering numerous tour and play opportunities for children in the surrounding area. Strong high-tour mountaineers also set off from the Glorer Hütte to climb the Grossglockner, Austria's highest peak, via the Burgwartscharte and Mürztaler Steig to the Adlersruhe and then the normal route. The hut was built in 1887 on the initiative of the Prague merchant Johann Stüdl, who was also involved in the construction of the Stüdlhütte and the old and new Prager Hütte. The builders were Veit Oberlohr, Paul Schnell and Thomas Huter from Kals am Großglockner. The name derives from the Kalser district of Glor, from which all three builders came. The hut was originally owned by the mountain guides' association. In 1922 the heirs sold it to the Donauland section of the DuOeAV; in 1924 the section was expelled from the DuOeAV and expanded the hut from 55 m² to 88 m². In 1938 the Glorer-Hütte was expropriated and renamed Teplitzer-Hütte (new owner: Teplitz section in the DAV). In 1952 the AV Donauland got the hut back. In 1968 the Eichstätt section bought the hut on 24 February for 40,000 DM, built the water pipeline and high-level tank, and held a takeover celebration on 27/28 July. The first chairman Dr. Biechele said: "We have found a mountain home!" In 1970 the material cable car was built and inaugurated on 4 September 1971. In 1976 a three-chamber septic tank was built and the toilet facilities were converted. In 1980 Michael Holzer became hut warden but died in an accident on 19 September. In 1981 Andi and Elfi Leitner became the new hut wardens and decided to expand the hut. In 1982 the expansion, renovation and shingling began, with 15,000 voluntary working hours. In 1987 the centenary was celebrated in Eichstätt on 1 May, and the keystone was laid on 18 July by first chairman Gerd Sturm. In 1990 Christian Oberlohr became hut warden. In 1993 the combined heat and power plant was inaugurated. In 2006 Toni Riepler became the new hut warden. In 2009 a new emergency staircase was built. In 2014 Alfred Graf became the new hut warden. The hut offers 14 beds in two- and multi-bed rooms and 37 places in dormitories during the operating season, and a winter room with four dormitory places is open the rest of the year. It has two guest rooms, a kitchen (no self-catering), a boot room, a storage room, WC facilities on the ground and upper floors, and washrooms and a shower on the upper floor. Heating of the guest rooms is by central heating or tiled stove. The hut is used by both day visitors and overnight guests. It is supplied by a material cable car, which can also transport backpacks. In September 2011 the hut was closed by official order; after sewer lines were laid in June and connection to the sewage treatment plant was made, it reopened at the end of June 2012. Since then it also has a mains electricity connection. Since 2020 the hut has also been open in autumn and winter during the ski touring season. Closing time is April and May. In 2022 the Eichstätt section merged with the Neuburg/Donau section and in 2023 renamed itself Sektion Eichstätt-Neuburg.
