Overview
GLTECHNO HOLDINGS, INC. (ジーエルテクノホールディングス株式会社) is a Japanese holding company headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo. It was established on October 1, 2024, through a joint share transfer (共同株式移転) between GL Sciences Inc. (ジーエルサイエンス株式会社) and Techno Quartz Inc. (テクノクオーツ株式会社). Upon formation, both operating companies became wholly owned subsidiaries of the new holding company, and GLTECHNO HOLDINGS took their place on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard Market. The group operates through three core business segments: analytical instruments, semiconductors, and automatic recognition. The analytical instruments business, led by GL Sciences, handles a wide range of devices, consumables, and reagents that support analysis in fields such as pharmaceutical R&D, chemical quality control, food safety testing, and water quality inspection. The semiconductor business, centered on Techno Quartz, manufactures high-purity quartz glass and crystalline silicon parts used as consumables in front-end semiconductor manufacturing processes such as etching and CVD. The automatic recognition business, represented by GL Solutions, develops and sells RFID-related products that read and write data from IC chips embedded in cards and tags using electromagnetic induction or radio waves. The group has a global footprint with subsidiaries and affiliates in Japan, China, the Netherlands, the United States, and Vietnam. These include GL Sciences B.V. in Eindhoven, GL Sciences Inc. in Torrance, California, GL TECHNO America, Inc. in Oakland, California, 技尔(上海)商貿有限公司 in Shanghai, 杭州泰谷諾石英有限公司 in Hangzhou, and TECHNO QUARTZ VIETNAM CO., LTD. in Ninh Binh Province, Vietnam. The group has also been shifting production capacity back to Japan from China. GLTECHNO HOLDINGS positions itself as a technology-driven holding company supporting analysis and advanced manufacturing. Its predecessor companies bring decades of specialized experience: GL Sciences traces its origins to 1968 as Gaschrom Industry Co., Ltd., while Techno Quartz was founded in 1976 as Gaschrom Yamagata Co., Ltd. The holding company continues to invest in production capabilities, including the establishment of a Creative Value Center (CV Building) at its comprehensive technical center in Iruma, Saitama in July 2025.
History
The history of GLTECHNO HOLDINGS is rooted in its two predecessor companies, GL Sciences and Techno Quartz, both of which have operated for decades in specialized technology fields. GL Sciences was originally founded in February 1968 as Gaschrom Industry Co., Ltd. (ガスクロ工業株式会社) in Shinjuku, Tokyo, with capital of 1,500 thousand yen. Its purpose was the manufacture and sale of column packing materials and consumable parts for gas chromatography. In September 1971, the company built the Tokorozawa Plant in Saitama Prefecture and moved its head office factory there. In April 1975, it built the Musashi Plant in Iruma, Saitama, relocating from Tokorozawa. In October 1976, it established a subsidiary, Gaschrom Yamagata Co., Ltd. (株式会社ガスクロ・ヤマガタ), in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. In April 1980, a new head office building was completed in Nishi-Shinjuku, Tokyo, and the head office moved from Kashiwagi. In December 1983, the company registered as a measuring instrument manufacturer. In April 1986, the Fukushima Plant (Phase 1) was built in the Fukushima Industrial Park in Fukushima City, and part of the Musashi Plant was relocated there. In May 1990, due to redevelopment of the Nishi-Shinjuku 6-chome area, the head office was temporarily moved to Kabukicho, Shinjuku. In October 1990, the company changed its name to GL Sciences Inc. (ジーエルサイエンス株式会社). In April 1991, the subsidiary Gaschrom Yamagata changed its name to Techno Quartz Inc. (テクノクオーツ株式会社). In November 1994, the company acquired the entire 30th floor of Shinjuku Square Tower and moved its head office there. In September 1995, it was listed on the over-the-counter market of the Japan Securities Dealers Association and increased capital to 1,040,875 thousand yen. In December 1996, it acquired AI Technology Inc., a developer-manufacturer of contactless IC cards and related equipment, as a subsidiary. In February 1998, the Fukushima Plant obtained ISO9001 certification. In October 2001, AI Technology was merged into the company and restarted as the Contactless ID Business Division. In November 2001, a comprehensive technical center was built in Iruma, Saitama. In March 2002, it acquired the Dutch company ATAS as a subsidiary and renamed it ATAS GL International B.V. In August 2004, it obtained ISO14001 certification. In February 2005, it established GL Sciences, Inc. in California, USA. In March 2005, it was listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and increased capital to 1,207,795 thousand yen. In September 2006, it concluded a business and capital alliance with Shimadzu Corporation regarding analytical and scientific instruments. In July 2007, it established a joint sales company, Shimadzu GL (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd., in Shanghai with Shimadzu (Hong Kong) Ltd. In November 2007, it established Growth Inc. (株式会社グロース) within the Fukushima Plant site. In April 2013, the Automatic Recognition Business Division (formerly Contactless ID Business Division) was spun off as GL Solutions Inc. (ジーエルソリューションズ株式会社). In April 2014, ATAS GL International B.V. was renamed GL Sciences B.V. after adding the company's European base functions. In April 2017, it made From Inc. (株式会社フロム) a subsidiary. In July 2018, the joint venture with Shimadzu (Hong Kong) was dissolved. In October 2018, it established 技尔(上海)商貿有限公司 in Shanghai. In April 2022, following the Tokyo Stock Exchange market reorganization, it transitioned to the Standard Market. In November 2024, capital was reduced to 350,000 thousand yen. In July 2025, the Creative Value Center (CV Building) was established at the comprehensive technical center in Iruma, Saitama. Techno Quartz was founded in October 1976 as Gaschrom Yamagata Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Gaschrom Industry, with capital of 10,000 thousand yen, for the manufacture and sale of products for scientific instruments. In September 1978, it entered the field of quartz glass products for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In October 1979, capital was increased to 12,000 thousand yen. It later changed its name to Techno Quartz Inc. and became a key manufacturer of high-purity quartz glass and crystalline silicon parts for semiconductor front-end processes. On February 9, 2024, GL Sciences and Techno Quartz signed a basic agreement for a joint holding company establishment through a joint share transfer. In June 2024, the share transfer plan was approved at both companies' annual shareholders' meetings. On October 1, 2024, GLTECHNO HOLDINGS, INC. was established through the joint share transfer. GL Sciences and Techno Quartz became wholly owned subsidiaries, and GLTECHNO HOLDINGS was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard Market in their place. The holding company has since worked to strengthen production capacity, including shifting production bases from China back to Japan.
