Overview
GLYCOM A/S is a Danish bioscience company that pioneered the commercial-scale production of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), complex carbohydrates naturally found in human breast milk. Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Hørsholm, Denmark, Glycom developed proprietary fermentation technology to produce HMOs for infant formula and other nutritional applications. The company became a key supplier to the global infant nutrition industry, offering HMOs such as 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) and lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT). In 2020, Glycom was acquired by DSM (now dsm-firmenich) and integrated into its Health, Nutrition & Care business. Today, as part of dsm-firmenich, Glycom's HMO portfolio is marketed globally, with products reaching over 165 countries. The brand is recognized for its scientific leadership in HMO research and its role in advancing early life nutrition.
History
GLYCOM A/S was founded in 2005 in Denmark with a focus on the emerging field of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The company established its headquarters in Hørsholm and built a research and production facility to develop HMOs through microbial fermentation. In the 2010s, Glycom achieved regulatory approvals for its HMO products, including GRAS status in the United States and Novel Food approval in the European Union, enabling their use in infant formula. The company partnered with major infant nutrition manufacturers and expanded its production capacity. In 2020, Glycom was acquired by DSM, a global science-based company active in nutrition, health, and sustainable living. The acquisition aimed to strengthen DSM's position in early life nutrition. Following the merger of DSM and Firmenich in 2023 to form dsm-firmenich, Glycom's HMO business was integrated into the Health, Nutrition & Care division. Today, dsm-firmenich offers one of the largest portfolios of commercially available HMOs, with products sold in over 165 countries.
