Overview
GLYN GmbH & Co. KG is a German high-tech distributor specialising in electronic components and display system solutions from leading semiconductor manufacturers. Founded in 1980 by Glyn Jones, the company began as Europe's first distributor dedicated to Japanese semiconductor components, at a time when sales channels and information sources for Japanese semiconductors were poorly defined. From its first office in Niedernhausen, GLYN built its business on deep technical competence, intensive product support, reliable processes and sophisticated logistics. Over four decades the company broadened its portfolio from Japanese microelectronics to a full high-tech distribution offering. It opened up to non-Japanese franchise partners from 1999/2001 onwards, and today distributes microcontrollers, development tools and starter kits, power electronics, optoelectronics, flash memory media, wireless solutions, LED lighting, thermal printers, embedded PCs, and LCD, TFT and OLED displays. Its target markets include industrial electronics, measurement and control technology, drive technology, medical technology, telecommunications, automotive, digital imaging, digital signage and lighting. GLYN is headquartered in Idstein, near Frankfurt, with five sales offices in Germany and nine offices elsewhere in Europe, plus one office each in New Zealand and Australia. The company positions itself as a support-intensive specialist distributor: around 70 technical field sales staff, technical product specialists and application engineers provide customers with application know-how. Its services include technical consulting and field application engineering (FAE), programming services, seminars and training, custom labels, packaging and content loading for memory cards, Kanban, consignment and safety stock, EDI and international procurement. Revenue first exceeded 100 million euros in 2005. GLYN has been repeatedly recognised by suppliers, including being named Distributor of the Year, and maintains long-standing partnerships with manufacturers and customers spanning more than 30 years. The company remains privately held and continues to operate under the GLYN brand from its Idstein headquarters.
History
GLYN was founded in 1980 by Glyn Jones as Europe's first distributor for Japanese semiconductor components. At the time, sales channels and information sources for Japanese semiconductors were poorly defined, and Jones recognised the opportunity to specialise. The first company office was established in Niedernhausen under the name "Schöne Aussicht", and NEC became the distributor's first franchise partner. In the same year GLYN launched its customer magazine "Semiconductor-Times" for purchasing and development professionals. In 1984 the company introduced its memory comparison list, a much sought-after aid for development and purchasing departments. In 1990 GLYN built a new company building in Idstein, conveniently located on the A3 motorway near Frankfurt, providing room for growth. That same year, together with manufacturer Mitsubishi Electric, GLYN pioneered memory card distribution. In 1996 the company aligned itself towards embedded systems, participating in the first Embedded Systems trade fair in Sindelfingen. In 1998 GLYN became the first memory card distributor for digital photography at photokina. In 1999 the business evolved from Japanese microelectronics into high-tech distribution, opening up to new franchise partners. In 2000 GLYN laid the foundation for its popular low-cost starter kit series with a kit priced at DM 99, and it contributed to the successful European market launch of Mitsubishi's first mass-produced flash microcontroller, the M16C (today Renesas M16C), with a self-developed low-cost starter kit concept. In 2001 the Nettetal sales office opened, and the product portfolio was expanded to include non-Japanese manufacturers. By then the company had 19 sales offices in 11 countries. In 2004 the Idstein headquarters was expanded with new warehouse space and offices, and GLYN launched its own industrial memory brand, Xmore. In 2005 the 40,000th GLYN starter kit was sold, selling out at its release date, and revenue exceeded 100 million euros for the first time. GLYN continued to build long-standing partnerships, with customers and suppliers citing over 30 years of successful cooperation, and the company was repeatedly recognised as Distributor of the Year. Today GLYN remains headquartered in Idstein, with five sales offices in Germany, nine offices elsewhere in Europe, and one office each in New Zealand and Australia.
