Overview
GMH Gruppe (Georgsmarienhütte Unternehmensgruppe) is a German industrial group headquartered in Georgsmarienhütte, south of Osnabrück. It is one of Europe's leading producers of green steel, using electric arc furnaces fed with nearly 100% steel scrap. The group operates across the segments of circular economy, green steel and heavy forging, with more than 20 production sites, over 6,000 employees and activities in 50 countries, generating annual revenue of more than €2 billion. Its product range includes special bar quality steel, semi-finished and raw steel, bright steel, open-die forgings, ring-rolled products, drop forgings, steering components, castings and recycling services. GMH Gruppe positions itself as a pioneer of climate-friendly steelmaking, saving more than one million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually compared to the conventional blast furnace route, and aims for net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2039. The group is privately held under the umbrella of Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH, founded in 1997 by Jürgen Großmann. It serves markets such as automotive, wind energy, machinery and general engineering.
History
The origins of GMH Gruppe date back to April 1993, when Jürgen Großmann acquired the former Klöckner Edelstahl GmbH in Georgsmarienhütte near Osnabrück and transformed it into the independent, medium-sized steel company Georgsmarienhütte GmbH. Two years later, he laid the foundation for the later group by purchasing two recycling companies in Osnabrück, a steelworks in Austria, and a majority stake in a heat treatment operation in Osnabrück. From then on, Großmann expanded his group through further acquisitions. In 1997, when the group comprised ten companies, Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH was founded as the umbrella holding company. Großmann was sole shareholder and managing director. In 2003, the management was expanded to four managing directors. At the end of 2006, Jürgen Großmann handed over the chairmanship of the management board to his colleague Peter van Hüllen. From 1 January 2017, Frank Koch was chairman of the management board. The then CFO Thomas Löhr took over the chairmanship on an interim basis in December 2020, before the position was given to Alexander Becker on 1 July 2021. In 2012, the group generated revenue of €2.862 billion with 10,506 employees. In fiscal year 2013, revenue was €2.71 billion, with a loss attributed to special write-downs. 10,766 employees were on the payroll, of whom 380 permanent staff and around 100 temporary workers worked for WeserWind GmbH in Bremerhaven. 260 employees of WeserWind were put on short-time work in April 2014, and in late summer 2014, 130 employees (about a third of the workforce in production and administration at WeserWind) were made redundant. The construction of converter platforms was abandoned, and attempts were made to occupy other business fields such as the construction of heavy crane bridges. WeserWind filed for insolvency in January 2015. In 2016, a restructuring began with the aim of focusing on the core business of steel production and processing as well as forging and casting technology. In November 2016, it was announced that Gegenbauer Holding SE & Co. KG, Berlin, would take over 90% of the shares in RGM Holding GmbH previously held by Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH, retroactively to 1 January 2016. In November 2016, it was also announced that the GMH Gruppe would separate from its rail technology business. The sale to a Chinese investor group led by Full Hill Enterprises was to be completed by the end of 2016. The background to the insolvency proceedings for IAG MAGNUM GmbH, opened in July 2016, and its closure at the end of 2016, was the separation from loss-making business areas. At the end of 2018, the group still comprised 27 medium-sized companies from Germany, Austria, Turkey, Australia and the USA. All group companies are independent entities with business and operational responsibility. They are grouped into five business areas: steel production, steel processing, steering technology, forging technology, and casting. The group continues to operate under the umbrella of Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH and positions itself as Germany's green-steel producer, using electric arc furnaces with nearly 100% steel scrap.
