It occupies part of the former Zeiss works site, between Teichgraben and Carl-Zeiß-Platz, and between Ernst-Abbe-Straße and Ernst-Abbe-Platz. After renovation of existing buildings and the addition of new structures, it opened on 29 February 1996 and has since been the largest shopping centre in Jena and one of the largest in Thuringia. A further renovation in 2011/2012 expanded the retail area to approximately 32,000 m². The centre spans one to four floors, dominated by a glass construction spanning the passage. The Dorint Esplanade Jena hotel is directly adjacent to the Goethe Galerie. The property is owned by a real estate fund and operated by Wealth Management Capital Holding. Facility management was taken over by Sauter FM in 2012. The Goethe Galerie was awarded the MIPIM Award in the "Business Center" category in 1997. In spring 2017, as part of the idea competitions "Digitale Innovation" and "Digitale Plattformen" organised by the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, the Goethe Galerie was equipped with an iBeacon infrastructure to enable location-based services for customers, including planned indoor navigation. The project is intended as an innovation hub and test area for future implementation in stationary retail, supported by funds from the project funds "Digitale Innovation" and "Digitale Plattformen" provided by the Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society. The centre offers more than 80 shops, service providers and restaurants, covering fashion, electronics, gifts, homeware, jewellery and toys, and hosts regular events, making it a shopping and excursion destination for the whole family.
