Overview
Goldair Rail, formerly known as Rail Cargo Logistics Goldair (RCL Goldair), is a private Greek railway undertaking specialising in national and international rail freight transport and logistics. It was established in 2014 as a joint venture between the Austrian Rail Cargo Group, part of ÖBB and one of Europe's largest rail logistics operators active in 16 countries across Central and Southeast Europe, and the Greek Goldair Group, one of Greece's largest transport and logistics groups. The company's creation was aimed at entering the Greek rail freight market, developing logistics and intermodal services, and leveraging Greece's geographic position as a transit point towards Central and Southeast Europe. In 2015, Goldair Rail received a licence from the Greek Regulatory Authority for Railways (RAS) to provide rail traction services across the national network, with a particular focus on freight transport in Northern Greece. Commercial operations officially began in 2018 with freight routes initially concentrated in Northern Greece, specifically on the Thessaloniki–Eidomeni and Thessaloniki–Alexandroupoli axes. The company also developed its own terminal infrastructure in cooperation with local partners and has since expanded its activities to Attica. A five-year development programme for 2018–2023 included the gradual strengthening of commercial routes, the introduction of new rolling stock, and the expansion of storage facilities at Sindos. Goldair Rail does not own rolling stock; it leases traction units from the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE, formerly GAIAOSE), the state body managing railway rolling stock. The company has four traction units available for use, two electric (HellasSprinter) and two diesel (DE2000). The relevant contract was signed in 2020 and renewed in 2022 for a duration of 2.5 years, with an option for a further two-year extension that was activated. In August 2025, the company changed its name from Rail Cargo Logistics Goldair to Goldair Rail as a result of a corporate transformation. It remains part of the Goldair Group, which also includes Goldair Airline Services, Goldair Handling, Goldair Cargo, Medlog Hellas Logistics, Brinks Hellas, GoldLED, Travellair, and Baggagair.
History
Goldair Rail, originally named Rail Cargo Logistics Goldair, was founded in 2014 as a joint venture between the Austrian Rail Cargo Group (a member of ÖBB) and the Greek Goldair Group. The main goal of the joint venture was to enter the Greek rail freight market, develop logistics and intermodal transport services, and exploit Greece's geographic advantage as a transit point towards Central and Southeast Europe. Soon after its establishment, the company expressed interest in operating freight routes on the Greek railway network and officially submitted an application to the competent authority. In 2015, Goldair Rail received a licence from the Regulatory Authority for Railways (RAS) to provide rail traction services, with activities extending across the entire railway network and particularly focusing on freight transport in Northern Greece. Commercial operations officially began in 2018 with freight routes initially concentrated in Northern Greece, specifically on the Thessaloniki–Eidomeni and Thessaloniki–Alexandroupoli axes. At the same time, the company developed its own terminal infrastructure in cooperation with local partners. The company has since expanded its activities to Attica.
