Overview

Goll Orgelbau AG is a Swiss organ-building firm based in Lucerne. Its origins trace to Friedrich Goll (1839-1911), who took over the Haas workshop in Lucerne in 1868. The Aktiengesellschaft was founded in 1928. The company builds new organs, restores historical instruments, and carries out revisions; its website documents dispositions and photos of all Goll organs from the last 50 years.

History

Friedrich Goll (1839-1911), born in Bissingen (Württemberg), learned organ building from 1853-58 with his brother Christoph Ludwig Goll in Kirchheim u. Teck. After journeyman years in Paris and England, he worked for Friedrich Haas, one of the most important organ builders of the 19th century. In 1868 Friedrich Goll took over the Haas workshop in Lucerne. Until 1895 mechanical cone chests were built, thereafter pneumatic systems under his own patent. In 1905 the sons Karl and Paul took over the business and led it through a turbulent period up to the internationally celebrated construction of the largest organ in Switzerland in the Engelberg monastery church (IV, 135 stops, 1926). In 1928 the Aktiengesellschaft was founded with partners Paul Goll (technical director) and the voicer Wilhelm Lackner. In 1955 Paul died, and his son Friedrich followed in his father's footsteps in the third generation. After the tragic accidental death of Friedrich Goll, Beat Grenacher and Jakob Schmidt took over the traditional Lucerne organ-building firm in 1972. Beat Grenacher devoted himself to the tonal area from scaling to voicing; Jakob Schmidt was the designer and constructor.
