Gomel Starter Motor Plant named after P.K. Ponomarenko (OAO «Гомельский завод пусковых двигателей им. П.К. Пономаренко») is a Belarusian machine-building enterprise based in Gomel. The enterprise traces its origins to 1944, when a motor-repair plant was organized in Gomel. In 1945, motor-assembly and mechanical shops were put into operation, followed by a motor shop in 1947. In 1959, the plant was reconstructed and reoriented to the production of tractor starter motors. Initially the plant was subordinate to the People's Commissariat (from 1946, Ministry) of Agriculture of the BSSR; as of 1959 it was part of the Directorate of Spare Parts and Repair Enterprises of the Council of the National Economy of the BSSR. In 2003, the plant joined the Minsk Motor Plant production association. As of 2008, the enterprise had mothballed a new industrial site, concentrating equipment at the old site. In 2008, the possibility of placing some ZiL production facilities at the mothballed new site was discussed. In the modern period, the plant produces components and spare parts for agricultural machinery (starter motors, reducers), welding electrodes, consumer goods, and trailed tanks for food liquids. It employs around 530 people. Today it operates as an open joint-stock company within the Minsk Motor Plant holding, producing diesel-pump units, starter motors, spare parts for Minsk Motor Plant diesel engines, and non-standard products to customer drawings, and offering industrial services such as laser and plasma cutting, bending, plastic injection molding, and mechanical assembly.
