Overview

Gontermann-Peipers is a family-run foundry company that describes itself as a 200-year-old business founded in 1825. Its core competencies are rolls for the steel and aluminium industry, cast components for mechanical engineering, and container bodies for civil nuclear technology. The company states that nearly 200 years of experience, technological competence and continuous research and development have made it a globally leading company in roll manufacturing for various fields of application in the steel and aluminium industry. Its cast products include products from chill casting, centrifugal casting, continuous casting and classic hand moulding, used mainly in general mechanical engineering, heavy machinery construction and the hydraulics industry.

History

Gontermann-Peipers traces its development to the rich mineral resources of the Siegerland region and its 2,500-year tradition of ore mining and iron smelting. According to the company, it grew from the simplest circumstances into a leading foundry for high-performance components since 1825. In 1820 Johann Heinrich Breitenbach, described as the founder of GP, learned his craft at the Marienborner Hütte near today's Marienborn works of GP; the Marienborner Hütte formed the nucleus of Siegerland roll casting around 1820. In 1825 Breitenbach and his wife Wilhelmine Catharina went into business for themselves in the Sieghütte district of Siegen, forming cast parts in their own home, with casting done at the nearby Sieghütte blast furnace. After Breitenbach's early death in 1855, his daughter Catharina and her husband Gustav Gontermann continued the firm under his name as Gustav Gontermann GmbH. In 1883 Emil Peipers, described as a versatile industrial pioneer, founded a new foundry in the immediate neighbourhood of the Hainer Hütte, operating as Commandit-Gesellschaft Emil Peipers & Cie. In 1894 Emil Peipers received a patent for an improved production process.
