Overview
GoodMills Deutschland GmbH is a German grain milling company and one of the largest in the country, with around 360 employees and ten locations nationwide. It traces its origins to 1883, when Emil Kampffmeyer established a commission business for grain and flour in Potsdam. Through the twentieth century the family business, led by Kurt Kampffmeyer Sr. and later Kurt Kampffmeyer Jr., expanded by acquiring and merging traditional mills and silo operations, becoming one of Germany's leading milling groups. In 2014 the former VK Mühlen AG was renamed GoodMills Deutschland GmbH, and its headquarters are in Hamburg. The company belongs to the Austrian GoodMills Group. The company processes roughly 1.5 million tonnes of grain, rice and pulses per year. Its product range covers household flours, semolina, groats and baking mixes sold under well-known brands such as Aurora, Diamant, Gloria and Rosenmehl, as well as industrial and bakery flours supplied to food manufacturers and the baking trade. Its mills include the Aurora Mühle in Hamburg, the Hildebrandmühlen in Frankfurt and Mannheim, the Rosenmühle in Landshut-Ergolding, the Schüttmühle in Berlin and the Castellmühle in Krefeld. The division GoodMills Innovation GmbH, based in Hamburg, develops clean-label ingredients based on grains and pulses for the food, baking, snack and nutraceutical industries. GoodMills Deutschland is primarily active in the German market, where it held a market share of around 15.4% in 2013. As a financial and management holding, it organizes its operations into three operating business areas. Its flours reach bakeries, supermarkets and kitchens across Germany and Europe, and the company states that the flour for every fifth bread roll in Germany comes from its mills.
History
The origins of today's GoodMills Deutschland go back to 1883, when Emil Kampffmeyer established a commission business for grain and flour in Potsdam. His son Kurt Kampffmeyer Sr. expanded the family business by entering the milling trade, beginning with the purchase of the Potsdam steam mill in 1915. In 1922 the company headquarters moved to Berlin and the business expanded through the takeover of several traditional mills and silo operations. After the Second World War the milling operation lost numerous sites, including in Potsdam, Jarmen and Pritzwalk. The headquarters was first moved to Hameln and then to Hamburg. On the death of Kurt Kampffmeyer Sr. in 1949, his son Kurt Kampffmeyer Jr. took over the company and continued his father's expansion strategy in West Germany. In addition to the merger with Duisburger Mühlen AG in 1973, a year later he acquired a majority stake in Vereinigte Kunstmühlen (VK) Landshut Rosenheim AG. In 1975 Kampffmeyer also bought the Auer-Großmühle in Cologne-Deutz, which was merged with the Ellmühle. This renewed expansion not only increased production capacity but also brought well-known brands into the product portfolio: the Landshut site brought the Rosenmehl brand, the purchase of the Cologne Auer mill strengthened the Aurora brand, and the portfolio was later extended with the Diamant and Gloria brands. In 1983 the company was renamed Vereinigte Kunstmühlen Aktiengesellschaft and took over Kampffmeyer Mühlen GmbH Handelshaus E. Kampffmeyer. At the general meeting on 28 August 1990 the name was changed to VK Mühlen Aktiengesellschaft and the head office was moved from Landshut to Hamburg. In 1999 the Hamburg-based BM Bäckermühlen AG, then Germany's third-largest milling company, was integrated. The present GoodMills Group (formerly LLI Euromills) became the majority shareholder of VK Mühlen AG in 2004. In 2013 Kampffmeyer celebrated 130 years of company history. In October 2014 VK Mühlen AG was renamed GoodMills Deutschland GmbH. GoodMills Deutschland GmbH is primarily active in the German market, where it held a market share of around 15.4% in 2013. Under the umbrella of GoodMills Deutschland GmbH as a financial and management holding, the group is divided into three operating business areas. Its locations include the corporate headquarters in Hamburg; the Aurora Mühle in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, built in 1897 by Georg Plange as the largest mill on the continent and today producing 200,000 t of flours, semolina and baking mixes for households under the Aurora, Diamant and Gloria brands; the Hildebrandmühlen in Frankfurt, founded in 1914 as Frankfurter Mühlenwerke and acquired by Kampffmeyer in 1972, producing 130,000 t of soft wheat and rye flours, semolina and groats annually; the Hildebrandmühlen in Mannheim, founded in 1906 and part of the Kampffmeyer mills since 1928, with a capacity of 150,000 t and the largest durum wheat milling operation in Germany; the Rosenmühle in Landshut-Ergolding, founded in 1898 as Vereinigte Kunstmühlen Landshut, part of the Kampffmeyer group from 1974 and today milling about 200,000 t of rye and wheat per year, especially the traditional Rosenmehl; the Schüttmühle in Berlin, part of the Kampffmeyer group from 1922, with the current mill built in 1986 and expanded in 1992, processing about 165,000 t of wheat annually for Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony-Anhalt; and the Castellmühle in Krefeld, a new mill at the Krefeld Rhine port with a milling capacity of 365,000 tonnes. The division GoodMills Innovation GmbH, based in Hamburg, develops clean-label ingredients based on grains and pulses for diverse applications in the food, baking, snack and nutraceutical industries as well as the baking trade.
