Overview

Goshen Theater is a historic nonprofit performing arts and movie theater located in downtown Goshen, Indiana, United States. It opened in 1905 as the Jefferson Theater, was destroyed by fire in 1906, rebuilt and reopened in 1907, and in 1948 was converted from a playhouse into a cinema and renamed the Goshen Theater. After closing to the public in 1986 amid downtown economic decline, the building was used as a church meeting space from 1987 to 2013. In 2012, the nonprofit Goshen Theater, Inc. (GTI) was founded and conducted a feasibility and market study to evaluate revitalization; GTI purchased the building in 2014 and began addressing major safety issues. Limited programming resumed in 2016, and a multi-phase restoration campaign followed, with Phase 1 renovations completed in 2021. Today the theater presents a mix of live performances, musicals, concerts, films, educational classes, and community events, and offers rental spaces for civic and business gatherings. Its mission is to be a catalyst for exploring creativity and imagination through educational and entertaining arts programming, and its vision is to serve as a regional hub for the arts in Goshen and beyond.

History

The Goshen Theater began as the Jefferson Theater, which opened in 1905 in downtown Goshen, Indiana. It was destroyed by fire in 1906 and rebuilt and reopened in 1907. In 1948 the venue was converted from a playhouse into a cinema and renamed the Goshen Theater. By 1986, downtown Goshen was in economic decline and the theater closed to the public. From 1987 to 2013 the facility was owned and used as a church meeting space. In 2012, the nonprofit Goshen Theater, Inc. (GTI) was founded and conducted a feasibility and market study to evaluate revitalization of the building. GTI purchased the building in 2014 and began fixing major safety issues. In 2016 GTI offered limited programming, mostly movies and special events. In 2017 GTI launched Phase 1 of the Next Act Fundraising Campaign. The restoration campaign was completed in 2020, and in 2021 Phase 1 renovations were completed. Improvements included bringing fire escapes up to code, interior sewer replacement, HVAC repairs, securing a three-way liquor and restaurant license to expand concessions, upgrading rigging above the stage to code, a new screen and upgraded projector, a newly designed lobby, expanded bathrooms, an elevator serving all four floors, a completely renovated ballroom on the third floor, and the newly named Miller Auditorium with new seats, flooring, wall fabric, stage curtains, and other amenities. In 2022 the staff was expanded to include an Executive Director and Program Director, joining the Technical Director and Front-of-House Manager, and the educational department expanded to year-round programming with an Education Director. That year Goshen Theater also launched in-house productions with "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." From 2022 to 2024, Goshen Theater completed a strategic plan with consultants Webb Management. Today the theater operates as a nonprofit arts hub presenting live performances, films, educational classes, and community events, and renting spaces for civic and business use.
