Overview

Gothaplast is the brand name of Gothaplast Verbandpflasterfabrik GmbH, a German manufacturer of adhesive plasters and medical dressings based in Gotha, Thuringia. The brand's origins lie in the wartime relocation of the pharmaceutical entrepreneur Carl Blank's plaster business. Blank, who had founded a dressing-plaster factory in Bonn in 1908, was instructed by the responsible Reich ministry in 1944 to establish a branch operation in central Germany because of feared Allied bombing raids. The Swiss entrepreneur Hans Conrad Wirz (1912–1999) selected the site, and in May 1944 the Carl Blank KG, Verbandpflasterfabrik, Zweigstelle Gotha was founded in the Kindleber Straße commercial district of Gotha. After the Second World War the company passed through several ownership and administrative changes. In 1946 the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD) took over administration of the Swiss-run operation, which Wirz renamed Pflasterfabrik Hans C. Wirz, Gotha and continued to run as a foreign enterprise. At the end of 1950 the German Democratic Republic assumed administration and renamed the products Blankplast and Traumaplast to Gothaplast and Wirgoplast. Until 1970 the firm was subordinate to the VVB Pharmazeutische Industrie Berlin and was then incorporated into VEB Jenapharm. Wirz received compensation for the sale of trademarks, inventories and raw materials. As part of a modernization programme the operation was relocated between 1978 and 1982 to Siebleben, where it still has its headquarters today on a street named after its founder. Gothaplast's product range includes various plasters, such as wound plasters, warming plasters, adhesive plasters and HydroGel plasters. Under the Rotpunkt brand name the company also distributes rubber gloves made of latex, nitrile or vinyl. The brand is registered as a trademark and remains active in the German market.

History

Gothaplast is the brand name of Gothaplast Verbandpflasterfabrik GmbH in Gotha, Thuringia. Its history begins with the pharmaceutical entrepreneur Carl Blank, who had founded a dressing-plaster factory in Bonn in 1908. In 1944, the responsible Reich ministry instructed Blank to establish a branch operation in central Germany because of feared Allied bombing raids. The site selection was entrusted to the Swiss young entrepreneur Hans Conrad Wirz (1912–1999). The availability of skilled workers, the central German location, the city's reputation and its infrastructure led Wirz to choose Gotha. In May 1944 the Carl Blank KG, Verbandpflasterfabrik, Zweigstelle Gotha was founded in the commercial district on Kindleber Straße in Gotha. Shortly after the war, in 1946, the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD) took over administration of the Swiss-run operation. Wirz renamed it Pflasterfabrik Hans C. Wirz, Gotha and continued to run it as a foreign enterprise. At the end of 1950 the German Democratic Republic assumed administration of the company and renamed the products Blankplast and Traumaplast to Gothaplast and Wirgoplast. As part of a modernization programme the operation was relocated between 1978 and 1982 to Siebleben, where it still has its headquarters today on a street named after its founder. The product range of Gothaplast includes various plasters, for example wound plasters, warming plasters, adhesive plasters and HydroGel plasters.
