Overview
The Grünburger Hütte is a mountain refuge (Schutzhütte) in the Upper Austrian Prealps, owned and operated by the Grünburg section of the Österreichischer Alpenverein (ÖAV), the Austrian Alpine Club. It was built in 1927 and opened on 13 November 1927. The hut stands at 1,080 metres above sea level on the Brettmais, west of the Hochbuchberg, within the municipality of Steinbach an der Steyr. It is connected to the public sewer and electricity networks and can be reached by car via a non-public forest road. As a serviced alpine hut, the Grünburger Hütte functions as a hospitality and accommodation brand within the Austrian Alpine Club's network of refuges. It offers food, drink and overnight lodging to hikers, and serves as a base for walks and climbs in the surrounding prealpine terrain. Popular destinations from the hut include the Hochbuchberg (1,273 m, about half an hour), the Gaisberg (1,262 m, about one hour), the Kruckenbrettl (1,020 m, about one and a quarter hours) and the Schoberstein (about one and three-quarter hours). The hut also lies on several Austrian long-distance hiking trails: the Voralpenweg 04 from Vienna to Salzburg, the Salzburger Mariazellerweg 06 from Salzburg to Mariazell, and the Salzsteigweg 09 from Sternstein to Arnoldstein. Access routes to the hut include paths from the Steyrtal — via Haunoldmühle, Rodatal and the Seebacher starting point (about 1 hour 15 minutes), and via Dorngraben — as well as from the Ennstal via Trattenbach. The building has been extended several times, in 1928 and 1931, then in 1980–1982 and again in 1996, reflecting its continuing role in alpine tourism and recreation in the region. It is documented in the Austrian Alpine Club hut directory published in 2016.
History
The Grünburger Hütte was built in 1927 by the Grünburg section of the Österreichischer Alpenverein (ÖAV) and officially opened on 13 November 1927. It was conceived as a Schutzhütte — a protected mountain refuge — for walkers and climbers in the Upper Austrian Prealps. The hut stands at 1,080 metres above sea level on the Brettmais, west of the Hochbuchberg, in the municipality of Steinbach an der Steyr. The building was extended soon after opening, in 1928 and again in 1931, to meet growing demand. Further major expansion took place between 1980 and 1982, and another extension followed in 1996. These works kept the hut in step with the growth of alpine tourism in the region. Today the hut is connected to the public sewer and electricity networks and can be reached by car via a non-public forest road, while walkers approach it on foot from the Steyrtal (via Haunoldmühle, Rodatal and the Seebacher starting point, about 1 hour 15 minutes, or via Dorngraben) and from the Ennstal via Trattenbach. The Grünburger Hütte serves as a base for tours to the Hochbuchberg (1,273 m, about half an hour), the Gaisberg (1,262 m, about one hour), the Kruckenbrettl (1,020 m, about one and a quarter hours) and the Schoberstein (about one and three-quarter hours). It also lies on several Austrian long-distance hiking trails: the Voralpenweg 04 from Vienna to Salzburg, the Salzburger Mariazellerweg 06 from Salzburg to Mariazell, and the Salzsteigweg 09 from Sternstein to Arnoldstein. The hut is listed in the Austrian Alpine Club hut directory published in 2016 (Hoch hinaus! Wege und Hütten in den Alpen, Band 2, Böhlau Verlag, p. 105).
