GRÜNE LIGA – Netzwerk ökologischer Bewegungen – presents itself as a network of ecological movements that emerged from the Wende, while many of its members had already been active in environmental protection during the DDR period, working under the church, within the Kulturbund, or as independent groups. Its website lists topics and projects including Braunkohle, Gentechnik, Gesteinsabbau, Lithium, Pestizide, Rechenzentren, Streuobst, Verkehr and Wasser, alongside campaigns, position papers, publications and member groups.
History
According to the history page on its own website, GRÜNE LIGA – Netzwerk ökologischer Bewegungen – is a child of the Wende, yet many of its members were already actively engaged in environmental protection during the DDR era, doing so under the roof of the church, within the framework of the Kulturbund, or as independent groups. Topics at the time included waste imports, a one-sided energy concept based on lignite, and water bodies in a catastrophic state; one of the fundamental demands then was disclosure of environmental data. Active environmental engagement was repeatedly viewed with suspicion by the rulers, and attempts at channelling were undertaken, for example with the founding of the Gesellschaft für Natur und Umwelt (GNU) in 1980. Independent supra-regional activities were not desired at all, but ultimately could no longer be stopped. In April 1989, representatives from the Interessengemeinschaften Stadtökologie and similar GNU groups met in Potsdam to pursue DDR-wide networking.
