Overview
The Capítulo de Granada de la Fundación del Toro de Lidia (Granada Chapter of the Fundación del Toro de Lidia) is a territorial delegation of the Fundación del Toro de Lidia, a Spanish civil platform dedicated to the promotion and defence of bullfighting (tauromaquia). It was constituted in November 2018 at the Real Colegio Mayor San Bartolomé y Santiago in Granada, with the presence of the foundation's director general, Borja Cardelús. The chapter is directed by the lawyer Fernando Navarro, who has served as its coordinator and spokesperson since its creation. The chapter's mission is to establish relationships with institutions across the province of Granada and to promote bullfighting culture within it. It operates through working groups focused on politics and civil society, businesses and associations, those affected by animal-rights activism, and civil movements such as bullfighting clubs, cultural associations and tertulias. In June 2021, the chapter was visited by the president of the Fundación del Toro de Lidia, the bull breeder Victorino Martín, who praised the work carried out by the delegation. Among its institutional activities, the Granada chapter has worked with the Ayuntamiento de Atarfe since 2019 on the recovery of the town's bullring, which had been closed since 2015. Together with the Delegación de Agricultura, Ganadería y Pesca of the Junta de Andalucía in Granada, it sought financing aid for the province's fighting-bull ranches after the economic crisis caused by Covid-19 in Spain. During 2021, coordinator Fernando Navarro established political contacts with municipal corporations such as the Ayuntamiento de Motril to try to boost bullfighting in the capital of the Costa Granadina. Also during the 2021 Corpus festivities, a collaboration agreement was signed between the Ayuntamiento de Granada and the Fundación del Toro de Lidia to promote the city's bullfighting culture, particularly with a view to Granada's candidacy for European Capital of Culture in 2030. The foundation has also engaged with the Colegio de Abogados de Granada, forming a legal commission on bullfighting law with local lawyers linked to the sector. The chapter has developed several projects. Tauroaccesible, in collaboration with the civil platform La Ciudad Accesible and the ONCE territorial delegation in Granada, promotes collaboration with groups with special needs to bring bullfighting and its culture to them; adapted visits to the Granada bullring were organised, with the participation of the novillero Aquilino Girón. Villas Taurinas de Granada is a platform for the defence and dissemination of popular festivities in the comarcas of Guadix, Baza and Huéscar, and has led to procedures for declaring some of their festivities and traditions as Bien de Interés Turístico de Andalucía. The chapter also organises cultural jornadas during Granada's Corpus Christi festivities, involving academics and representative members of the bullfighting world. The Granada chapter is part of a network of territorial chapters of the Fundación del Toro de Lidia, alongside chapters such as those of Málaga, Córdoba, Salamanca and Tarragona. Its work reflects the foundation's broader strategy of normalising bullfighting as an element of Mediterranean culture within civil life.
