Overview

Grand City Surabaya (commonly abbreviated GC or GCS) is a mixed-use commercial complex in the Gubeng district of central Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. It combines a shopping mall, a convention and exhibition hall, and supporting facilities on a site of about 4.5 hectares. The complex is operated under PT Hardayawidya Graha and was conceived as a representative venue for large-scale and international events, reportedly inspired by Singapore's Suntec City. The convention and exhibition hall, Grand City Convention and Exhibition Hall, opened in March 2009 with an area of about 21,000 square metres, while Grand City Mall officially opened on 10 October 2010. A 30-metre connecting passage links the mall and the exhibition area on each mall floor. The complex sits between Jalan Walikota Mustajab and Jalan Kusuma Bangsa, close to Surabaya Gubeng railway station, which has led some residents to nickname it "Gubeng City" or "Gubeng City Mall". It is the third mall to stand along the Mas River, after Plaza Surabaya (1988) and World Trade Center Surabaya (1989). The development was planned as more than one-stop shopping: the concept is "one-stop MICE" (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions), with the mall, office space, a five-star hotel and apartments intended to be integrated on the same site. The target audience is the upper segment seeking convenience, speed, ease and comfort. Parking is provided on each mall floor and connects to the convention area, with total capacity for around 2,500 vehicles. As a retail and events destination, Grand City Mall Surabaya serves shoppers and event visitors in Surabaya and the wider East Java region. Its official website presents the complex under the tagline "My City My Destination". The brand is best understood as a local commercial property and retail platform rather than a consumer-goods brand: its value lies in location, integrated MICE facilities and a mall anchored in the city centre.

History

Grand City Surabaya was developed by PT Hardayawidya Graha on a site of about 4.5 hectares in the Gubeng area of central Surabaya, between Jalan Walikota Mustajab and Jalan Kusuma Bangsa and close to Surabaya Gubeng railway station. The project was reportedly inspired by Singapore's Suntec City and was intended to become the most representative venue for large-scale and international events in the city. After roughly three years of market research by the management, the concept was expanded from one-stop shopping to "one-stop MICE" — meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions — with plans for a mall, office space, a five-star hotel and apartments integrated on the same site. The first component to open was the Grand City Convention and Exhibition Hall, which began operating in March 2009 with an area of about 21,000 square metres. It was built next to the planned mall, and a 30-metre connecting passage was provided so that mall visitors could reach the exhibition area from each mall floor. Grand City Mall itself officially opened on 10 October 2010. With its opening, Grand City became the third mall to stand along the Mas River, following Plaza Surabaya (1988) and World Trade Center Surabaya (1989). The complex was designed for visitor traffic with parking on each mall floor connected to the convention area, and total parking capacity for around 2,500 vehicles. Its target market was the upper segment seeking practicality, speed, ease and comfort. Because of its location near Surabaya Gubeng station, some Surabaya residents playfully call the complex "Gubeng City" or "Gubeng City Mall". The official website presents the destination under the tagline "My City My Destination". The available sources do not record later ownership changes, expansions or redevelopments, so the brand's documented history centres on its conception, the 2009 opening of the convention hall and the 2010 opening of the mall.
