Overview

GrandOmics (希望组) is a Chinese life-science company specializing in third-generation, or long-read, DNA sequencing technology and its applications. According to its official website, the company was founded on 8 August 2011 and originally pioneered third-generation sequencing technology services in China under the brand name "未来组" (Wei Lai Zu / Future Group). It describes itself as both a third-generation sequencing service company and a third-generation sequencing big-data diagnostics company, and positions itself as a pioneer of long-read sequencing big-data technology and applications. The company operates through four business modules: technology services (科技服务), medical diagnostics (医学诊断), bioinformatics (生物信息), and advanced manufacturing (先进制造). It has built research service platforms and medical testing laboratories in Beijing and Wuhan totaling more than 5,000 square meters, and has introduced advanced platforms including the Oxford Nanopore Technologies PromethION 48, PacBio Sequel II, MGISEQ2000/T7, and Bionano Saphyr optical mapping systems. Its technology services arm, formerly Wuhan Future Group (武汉未来组), provides research services to universities and institutes in areas such as plant and animal genomics, full-length transcriptomics, single-cell sequencing, epigenomics, microbial genomics, metagenomics, microbial diversity, and structural variation detection. GrandOmics has developed its own bioinformatics tools and platforms, including the NextDenovo/NextPolish series of third-generation sequencing assembly software, the GrandVariants (GrandSV/GrandSTR) genome variation analysis system, GrandPathogen pathogen detection software, the GrandBox genetic disease big-data analysis system, SCAN-seq single-cell sequencing technology, Grand-C next-generation three-dimensional genomics technology, and the dbSV human genome structural variation database. It has also built a Huawei Cloud third-generation sequencing high-performance computing cluster. The company states that its core team consists of long-read sequencing experts, with more than 50% holding master's or doctoral degrees. GrandOmics has appeared on the Nature Index annual lists for 2020–2024 and was named to the "Future Medical 100 – China Medical Services Top 100" for 2019–2022. In 2024 it received Wuhan's "Five-Star High-Tech Enterprise" designation. It has attracted investment from well-known Chinese venture capital institutions including Matrix Partners China, SAIF Partners, Zero2IPO Capital, Farview Capital, and Chang Development Investment. Its diagnostics arm focuses on applying third-generation sequencing to precision medicine, including genomic disease diagnosis, tumor diagnosis, and metagenomics research, and has launched programs such as the Personal Reference Genome Service Plan (PRGSP), single-gene genetic disease solutions, the dbSV-100K large-scale population sequencing project, and the "中华家系一号" (Chinese Family No. 1) project. The company reports close to 500 high-level SCI papers published with collaborators, with a total impact factor of over 4,000, including publications in Cell, Nature, Science, Nature Genetics, and Molecular Plant.

History

GrandOmics traces its origins to 2011, when Wang Depeng founded Wuhan Future Group (武汉未来组) in Wuhan, described by the company as China's first third-generation sequencing service company. Wang had graduated from Peking University College of Life Sciences in 1997 and began working on sequencing technology applications at BGI in 2000, where he participated in early applications of first- and second-generation sequencing. The founding of Wuhan Future Group in August 2011 marked the company's entry into the then-emerging field of long-read, third-generation sequencing. In 2014, Wang founded Beijing GrandOmics (北京希望组), described as China's first third-generation sequencing precision medicine company. The company subsequently developed a dual identity as both a third-generation sequencing service company and a third-generation sequencing big-data diagnostics company, operating under the GrandOmics / 希望组 brand while its technology services arm retained the heritage of Wuhan Future Group. Over the following decade, GrandOmics built out four business modules: technology services, medical diagnostics, bioinformatics, and advanced manufacturing. It established research service platforms and medical testing laboratories in Beijing and Wuhan totaling more than 5,000 square meters, and introduced advanced sequencing and mapping platforms including the Oxford Nanopore Technologies PromethION 48, PacBio Sequel II, MGISEQ2000/T7, and Bionano Saphyr optical mapping system. The company invested in its own technology development, creating the NextDenovo/NextPolish series of third-generation sequencing assembly software, the GrandVariants (GrandSV/GrandSTR) genome variation analysis system, GrandPathogen pathogen detection software, the GrandBox genetic disease big-data analysis system, SCAN-seq single-cell sequencing technology, Grand-C next-generation three-dimensional genomics technology, and the dbSV human genome structural variation database. It also built a Huawei Cloud third-generation sequencing high-performance computing cluster. GrandOmics participated in landmark scientific projects, including the first Asian reference genome based on third-generation sequencing, "Huaxia No. 1" (华夏一号), the DNA N6-methyladenine (6mA) modification map, the challenging Paris polyphylla (重楼) lily genome research, and the "TOP1000 Insect Genome Project". It also launched major programs such as the Personal Reference Genome Service Plan (PRGSP), single-gene genetic disease precision solutions, the dbSV-100K large-scale population sequencing project, and the "Chinese Family No. 1" (中华家系一号) project. The company reports close to 500 high-level SCI papers published with collaborators, with a total impact factor of over 4,000, including publications in Cell, Nature, Science, Nature Genetics, and Molecular Plant. Recognition followed: GrandOmics appeared on the Nature Index annual lists for 2020–2024 and was named to the "Future Medical 100 – China Medical Services Top 100" for 2019–2022. In 2024 it received Wuhan's "Five-Star High-Tech Enterprise" designation. The company attracted investment from well-known Chinese venture capital institutions including Matrix Partners China, SAIF Partners, Zero2IPO Capital, Farview Capital, and Chang Development Investment. In 2024, Zhao Yunlong, formerly director of the Wuhan Sequencing Center, became COO, and in 2025 the company was selected for the Hubei Provincial SME Technology Center recognition list and reported a sequencing output breakthrough on the PacBio Revio platform.
