Overview
Graw Radiosondes is a family-run German company that has been manufacturing radiosondes for meteorological balloon ascents since 1938. Its radiosondes are meteorological measuring instruments for temperature, air pressure, humidity and wind data in higher air layers, launched with a balloon and transmitting data to ground stations. The company also supplies sounding systems and software, and is a member of the Noris Group. Its DFM-17 radiosonde is described as one of the smallest and lightest in the world, used worldwide by weather services and research institutes, and the company also offers the lidarCube lidar system for wind and temperature profiles.
History
Graw Radiosondes was founded in 1938 in Berlin, Germany, by the physicist Dr. Josef Graw as 'Dr. GRAW Messgeräte'. In 1942 Dr. Graw developed and patented the Graw morse encoding cylinder, a key component of the radiosonde that improved measurement precision. In 1948 the company relocated to Nuremberg, Germany, and developed the H50 and M60 radiosondes for the German Weather Service; the M60 pushed Graw Radiosondes to an international leading position in terms of accuracy and robustness. In 1976 Mr. Horst Schmidmer, owner of the Noris Group GmbH, took over all shares of Dr. Graw, and license production began for the RSG radiosonde for the German Weather Service and E076 for the German Army. In 1977 the E084 and E085 radiosondes were introduced for the German Army. In 1978 completely computer-controlled production and calibration began. In 1986 the mini radiosonde system TDFS / KS-87 was introduced for measurements in lower heights. In 1990 the first purely digital radiosonde DFM-90 and groundstation GK-90 were developed, and Surface Mounted Technology (SMT) was started to increase productivity. In 1995 the first GPS radiosonde DFM-90 DGPS was developed.
