History

Gray Monk Estate Winery is located in the heart of British Columbia's Okanagan Valley and has been pioneering cool-climate winemaking since 1972. It was founded in 1972 by George and Trudy Heiss, who left their hairdressing careers in Edmonton, Alberta, to plant roots in the Okanagan Valley. They transformed a former orchard into a vineyard, planting their first vineyard in 1972. Initially they sold grapes to commercial wineries but grew dissatisfied with how their fruit was being used, leading to the decision to make wine themselves. In 1976 the Heiss family imported Pinot Gris, Pinot Auxerrois and other varieties, making history by planting Canada's first Pinot Gris vines. Gray Monk introduced Pinot Gris to British Columbia, laying the foundation for the Okanagan as a world-class winemaking region. In 2017, Andrew Peller acquired Gray Monk.
