Overview

Greentown Labs is a network of climatetech and energy incubators. It helps climate and energy entrepreneurs build faster by connecting them to labs, community, capital, customers, talent, and partners. The organization began in 2011 when four MIT-affiliated startups shared a warehouse on Charles Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and has since grown into what its own history describes as the world's largest climatetech and energy incubator. It operates sites in Boston and Houston and reports having incubated over 700 startups, created more than 16,000 jobs, and maintained 247+ active member startups.

History

Greentown Labs began in 2011 when Promethean Power Systems, after co-founder Sorin Grama graduated from MIT, found a warehouse on Charles Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It teamed up with three other startups whose founders had also graduated from MIT and had seen how out-of-reach lab space can be for new companies. As news spread about the warehouse, more climatetech companies joined. Promethean co-founder Sam White described the group as "a hodgepodge of nomads" who traded technical tips and worked alongside each other late into the night. When Jason Hanna, co-founder of Coincident, spent significant time helping Promethean edit a grant proposal, White "realized something special was going on." The spirit of collaboration spread to every facet of entrepreneurship, from sharing equipment to swapping staff to lending emotional support. The benefits of that collaboration carried the unforeseen incubator from the Cambridge warehouse to Boston's Fort Point neighborhood, then being dubbed the "Innovation District." Greentown Labs describes itself as having become the world's largest climatetech and energy incubator, and it now operates sites in Boston and Houston.
